Finally got something accomplished in the shop today
Man, it's hard to get shop time around here. For months, all I've had time to do is maintenance to keep what I fly running and ready. In my newly emptied race car parts room, I made a place to store my modeling wood and wires and tubes. That liberated my big belt/disk sander so I can finish putting it together. It's been a wood table for 2 years now.
And I finally got to make some balsa dust. I cut out doublers for the Yak-9 and used my wing LE to wrap sandpaper around so I could use it as a sanding block to shape the mating surfaces of them. I should have saved a leftover piece of the LE stick for that. I also traced the Yak fuse on that laminated sheet I made last week. It's straight as an arrow now, and looks good. I used the newly shaped doublers to trace the LE curve on it and now the wing should fit right. The old fuse weighed 4.3 ounces. The new one weighs 3,3 ounces. I'm cool with that, already saving weight. I'm on a roll now.
I sanded the curves and round edges into the warped Skyray fuse in case that helps to relieve or expose any tendencies to warp any more, soaked it again and have it counter bowing now. I hope I don't have to make a new one.
I finished calculating the wing size for my P-51 speed plane so it's as scale as I can get. After I eat my ribeye and tater, I'm going to re-claim the dining room table and draw it up. I have a sheet ready to cut the fuse out. I haven't decided whether to use the same 1/4" sheet and sand an airfoil into it, or buy some 1/8" sheet to make the wing. If I get my belt sander running it might make shaping the wing easy... or easy to botch. We'll see.
Anyway it was nice to get back to accomplishing something for a change. It was a cold rainy day here, but I had the shop nice and toasty with a space heater. If I can drag my butt out there in the evenings, maybe I can continue making some progress. There's the Tach Race engine that needs attention too. I'll use the one i'm going to put on the speedster.

Don't worry Rusty... you can use balsa filler on the Yak's leading edge... to fill-in the thumb and finger-hold marks!
Sanding.... ughhh... I did a little today myself... feather-edging by hand... NOT my favorite thing...
Kudos on the gained space... it's at a SUPER premium at my house. Good luck on the P-51!!!!!!!

Lol, not a dent or divot. This is a Sterling kit, remember, the wood came from a baseball bat factory. Actually I was told that the truth is Sterling kit balsa came from the rejected too-heavy stock that they acquired from the life preserver factory next door. Yep, life jackets were stuffed with balsa back then.roddie wrote:Don't worry Rusty... you can use balsa filler on the Yak's leading edge... to fill-in the thumb and finger-hold marks! ....

Testify Brother !!!!!!!!!!! I bought a separate shed JUST to store my projects (well, OK, a Bike or two, and some camping gear also) and am STILL cramped for space. I could move into a gymnasium and have wings sticking out the windows in a week or two.
It's tough having to make a project of clearing space BEFORE working on a project, but I am not deterred !!! Now, for a quick, early-morning work session of cutting some engine bearers...once I clear the teetering Jenga stack of assorted Otto's, Baby Helicopters, a Sig Kadet carcass, and various hand tools from yonder table saw....

Lol. I really did laugh out loud at that. I love the new space, but I hate that my shop has lost so much of its personality due to the removal of my hotrod stuff. Still got my drag racing trophy though.Kim wrote:

The problem with creating more space it that is soon filled with more "stuff" which is of little practical use.
Enjoy the space; it's only temporary.

We're on a mission to not have to have our son deal with a mountain of dusty forgotten junk. If we do accumulate more "stuff," it will come with that consideration in mind. We have thinned out gradually over the last couple of years. If something comes in, something's gotta go.SuperDave wrote:Rusty:

My wife's grandmother is a pseudo hoarder (minus the dead cats) The family on her side are dreading having to sort through all that stuff when she passes...

Re: Finally got something accomplished in the shop today
My Brother used to store his hotrod parts in my garage... (when I used to have a garage...) Both; parts and garage are since long gone. There was an intake manifold with a tunnel-ram and dual 500cfm racing carbs on one shelf and a pair of cast iron 202 heads on another shelf... all small-block Chevy parts. "Lumpy" camshafts... I'm pretty sure he had some high-performance pistons with "Pink" connecting rods too. Hotrods are a lot of money... You can have more economical fun with DOZENS of airplanes... and enough extra space for 2500 engines like Ron has!

Umm yeah, about that. Just got confirmation last week that Shaw pulled out of the install. Apparently their mission is the most important mission in the AF and they can't fly a single approach without their ILS.
I was hesitant to tell you right away as folks are still trying to apply some downward pressure to get it done. Looks like it ain't going to happen anytime soon. Not to worry though as next time around it will not be optional and they will have to comply. It's just not going to be in January.
I was really looking forward to it. Sorry
Ron

Sorry man, when I found out you were the first person I thought of. There was a glimmer of hope, but it faded.
It will happen within the year...
