Camping at the Airport!
Well, the dreaded Ice Storm, breathlessly hooted about for the past three days on the local weather, is upon us. As I sit here in the pilot's lounge, listening to the crystal shards hammer the window behind my deep-cushioned chair, I am VERY happy to already be here for the 0500 opening of the office !!
Got my coffee pot locked and loaded, got the Assault Van set up for sleeping, with unlimited WiFi & Satellite TV 'till I'm ready for bed !! This AIN'T Bad!
Think I may have to bring my Craftsman roll-around down here, stuff it with clothes and move in !!!
'Course, that pre-coffee morning crankyness might do me in...
Hope everyone else that's dealing with it does so safely...

Re: Camping at the Airport!
Hopefully you brought your laptop charger and have a good internet connection, spend the whole night on here and watching YouTube videos.
You have to get more than a foot of snow overnight before things start shutting down around here. The roads were are all ice this morning and coming home, the city and county don't lower their plow blades to scrape the roads anymore (its supposed to save the plow edges...)and the chemicals they spread don't seem to work in temps below 10°F. You get the people who don't know how to drive in the snow and ice, they come flying around you and shortly after you see them up in someones front yard. Supposed to go down to -10°F tonight.

Re: Camping at the Airport!
OH YEAH !!! Definitely made the right move! Slept like a baby in the Assault Van, woke to the sound of a timer-triggered, brand new pot of Folgers being born, and got the whole place pretty much to myself !!!
My maintenance buds are out, fighting a losing battle against the snow, which is now covering the ice they were working on through the night.
Incredibly, Cape Air is actually considering making a run for it, and I'm on "Hot Standby", waiting to haul their 402 out through the white stuff. Figure they'll chuck the luggage AND passengers in the old Cessna and blast off before they get any accumulation of their plane, though our de-iceing gear is also ready to rock.
Luckily, in my mad dash to equip my wonderful van yesterday, I ALSO chucked in a few little helicopters, and will be rotorwinging around the hangar if Cape Air does bail outta here.
Be safe, my buds...I'm here and happy !!!!

Re: Camping at the Airport!
That is most curious! not the fact that it's snowing, but I just had a look on my map and Cape Girardeau is at the same latitude as the South of Spain and the Mediterranean Sea. And Ron's OKCity is as low as Morocco and Algeria on this side. I'm sure that they haven't seen snow over there since ages. They are now baking in the sun. (without Samantha Fish though) What would be the explanation for that (the weather).

I just looked up your current conditions on NOAA and it said "freezing fog" , can't imagine what that is like.
Good luck stay warm!

Think: microscopic ice crystals sticking to everything !
The airport is officially closed now, and TSA and our Cardinal Glennon Flight Nurses are bailing ! I'm gonna take another
The GOOD news is that the Restaurant is up and going! So, there will be catfish dinners to go with our blizzard, and I WON'T be doing "Rabbit-on-a-Stick" for lunch !!!

The weather just goes where the jet stream goes. In that part of the continent it dips right out of the arctic circle, bringing the cold air and moisture with it.

Re: Camping at the Airport!
I've run into this several times while duck hunting on the lakes around here. With air temps below freezing and the lake water above freezing, you get a heavy fog layer above the water. With a very light wind, the fog freezes on the upwind side to anything upright -- sticks, stalks, grass stems, etc. On occasion, I've seen it extend almost half an inch out from grass stems and it's as narrow as the stem itself. Any touch or minute vibration causes it to shatter. It's really quite beautiful, but generally short lived.crankbndr wrote:I just looked up your current conditions on NOAA and it said "freezing fog" , can't imagine what that is like.

Re: Camping at the Airport!
Lived up Admin's way for 6th an 7th grades in Fridley MN and further north in Alaska as a soldier.
Retired to Central Texas to stay out of that stuff
Wednesday I mowed my 2.5 acre rural "micro ranch" in 80 degree sunny nice Dec 4th day
Yesterday the front arrived and today is ice storm
Bought the modest place in 94, retired from Army 96 and each year have a photo of snow covered yard that is usually gone by 11 AM that day and back to a reasonable 50 60 degrees
Most snow in this area was 4" on Easter of 2007
You all stay safe this is a hard blow for most of the USA

Re: Camping at the Airport!
Years ago, we were hunting pigs around Wappello Lake, close to Poplar Bluff, Missouri. We'd get there before light and hoof it across some of the feed plots, hoping to ambush some ferrel hogs. I noticed what looked like frosted lilies. But there was no lily under the frost, and the things almost disappeared to nothing if you touched them.
Found out later that they're called "Frost Flowers". Wikipedia has this:

The boys are working at it, but right now, it's more just a matter of holding it off 'till this thing passes. Our airport is NOTAM'd "CLOSED" for three days...

Yeah, by our standards, it's a legitimate butt-kicking. I'm almost off-shift, and intend to pull the van into our big hangar and catch a righteous old-guy nap !Cribbs74 wrote:Man Kim,

Re: Camping at the Airport!
School was cancelled for us today. Went from raining yesterday to sleet as the sun went down. Around six this morning it turned to snow. Good building weather. Makes my glow engines cranky. My diesels do not seem to mind it.
On the other hand, my blue Ranger hates cold weather. You have to ride the gas and brake to keep the revs up enough so it does not die. Does it in the summer too but it is usually not a problem. Once the winter hits it gets to be pretty bad.
Weather station said we should be getting 1" per hour. I guess I oughta hook the plow to the tractor and take care of a few driveways on the road!
Godsey

HOME !!!!
Got a chance to bust out, and the rest of the crew is in good shape so, off we go---dashing through the snow...and ice...and several sideways 4WD's...dodging the standard-issue cuckoos on 4-wheelers...busting the mighty Assault Van through arrogant little whimpy drifts...to arrive safely back at The Hill!
Didn't even THINK about pulling that steep little driveway, so the Van got parked next to the milk shed. Got plenty of food and water, and the Skunk Works is operational, if somewhat drifted.
Welcomed by a near-swarm of chickadees and buntings wanting to be fed. With the livestock cared for, gonna knock off a hot, soaking bath and THEN do whatever comes to mind.
Two FREE days with the best favor-waiver short of tornado damage: "Sorry, I'm stuck on the hill and just CAN'T get out!!!"
WHAAAAHOO !!!!

Glad your home Kim. I've been thinking of you a little. Seeing snow outside and thinking it would be nice to be closer to learn to fly gliders from the 'MAN'.

Thanks Duke! The place looks mighty nice to me, eventhough I was pretty comfortable at the airport, I really like the Home Turf !duke.johnson wrote:Glad your home Kim. I didn't know WHAT the heck I was doing with gliders (an argument that can STILL be made with some legitimacy) before I got Dave Thornburg's "Old Buzzard Soaring Book" !!!
I've got a dog-ear copy of it I'll send you on extend loan if you'd like to check it out !!!
And Now, time for a Power Nap !!!!

Re: Camping at the Airport!
Looks like you all got pounded on the other side of the river --- we got about 1/2" of snow and 3/4" on ice on the roads. Looking out the window shows grass tops above the snow and the roads clearing off nicely in the bright sun.
When I opened the door to get the mail, the dog blasted out as usual, hit the ice and bounced down 3 steps before plopping into the yard with a "What the H**L?" look. No damage, but if dogs had facial expressions, her's was pretty sheepish.

Loving the title of thread Kim.
It means something a 'little different' round these parts.
