Cox Engine of The Month
Let's see your ugly engines :)

Let's see your ugly engines :)
Here's mine
A little bit about it:
• The cylinder is so worn out, you can see daylight around the piston, I think it has negative compression :)I even put in a .051 piston in there and it had plenty of wiggle room. I am kinda curious how that happened... but I'll never find out.
• No, the needle valve doesn't work, it actually needs the correct one to run, just stuck it in there for fun.
• This is the only postage stamp engine I've seen that uses a hacked up babe bee mount
• A few changes and it probably would run, I just keep it around as a fun piece

Don't have any ugly ones myself, I don't find any ugly really, but I gotta say I'm impressed with the dedication to assemble an engine that was put into yours. Gotta work with what ya got!

Re: Let's see your ugly engines :)
I don't so much consider the pictured engine so much "'ugly" as TRAGIC.
The good news is that our vendors have the parts to "restore" it.
The bigger question is WHY when it makes such a lovely conversation piece?

Yeah, no kidding. All it needs is a new backplate with screws, needle and reed with retainer, crankcase, piston and cylinder, head, gaskets and crankshaft. Give the drive plate a good buff and it'll be like new.SuperDave wrote:...The good news is that our vendors have the parts to "restore" it...

I propose a new thread:
"The Cox Hall of Shame" and the first candidate to be inducted would be the one shown in the picture.

Lighten up guys.... It was built with some of the ugliest parts I had on hand, let alone the odd babe bee postage mount.
Re: Let's see your ugly engines :)
I bet that back plate has the potential to kick some serious numbers in a tach race. Might need an auxilliary NVA to control pressure though.

I look at engines as I do women: It takes an ugly one to make you appreciate pretty one.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have met beautiful unattractive women and vice versa.
I imagine engines could be seen the same way. Take War Dog for example, it looks like a hot mess, but runs real well!

Re: Let's see your ugly engines :)
'Tis True!
War Dog was the engine that came with a fairly bedraggled Stuka I got from Stuka Willie. At the time he sold it to me, Willie was apologizing for the engine's condition, and offering to trade it out for a runner, but like Charlie Brown and his Christmas Tree, I felt it NEEDED me!
After soaking it in one of my concoctions, I used less-than subtle means to break it loose. To my amazement, the thing actually had a little compression!
So, I took a wire brush to the truly, solidly, rusted fins, replaced the gaskets and reed (may have left the reed in...have to check), and generally cleaned the thing...finally using the Stuka Fuse as a test stand...
Now, it's parked among the Thermal Hoppers, RR-1, and Tee Dee's, waiting for me to finish my Scientific "Stunt Trainer" and get back on track with Ron's Contest...

Re: Let's see your ugly engines :)
While not quite as traumatized as War Dog, this OK Cub showed up in my mail tray at the airport (Still haven't located and thanked the kind soul who left it for me), and has seen it's share of abuse.
I used it's snapped-off prop screw as an excuse to buy a drill press, and finally got it going.

No continued Hijack intended, but since Travis did not specify COX engines, I'd like to re-submit yet another off-breed: My much-hacked-upon swap-meet Fox "Rocket"!
