I know, it's a little late for pictures. And it still gets a racing number and a Blue Oyster Cult logo on the tail, but here she is. Balances right at the front leadout, am I lucky or what!

Re: CEF speed contest Design Discussions
Coool Rusty! I like the nose design. If you or Mark B. had built "Dago Red".. we could have had a period-correct shoot-out!!!
Re: CEF speed contest Design Discussions
Actually the plan was for a foamboard fuse, but when I weighed it, it was the same as balsa... before stiffening. So I used medium grade balsa, the same as you'd use with any fuselage. I didn't take any special precautions. The wing is a Sig airfoil, pretty stiff stuff. I'm worried that if there is any wind, and there will be, it'll be too light. The engine is my 2013 Tach Racer with a new Texas Timers NV. A cox 5x4 prop for starters, I don't have anything special in that department.Cribbs74 wrote:4.6oz?

I PM'd Jim a few days ago with regard to how our New England weather has been. CRAZY!! This past weekend was beautiful.. such that on Saturday; my wife and I felt compelled to start cleaning up the yard of Winter debris.. Sunday was 72 and I decided to prematurely open the pool. Monday the weather started to turn.. rain with wind gusts all day between 30-35 mph. The gas grill cover that had stayed secure all Winter; blew off... leaves got in the pool and clogged the skimmer.. more branches on the lawn.. and this morning, 1/2" of snow/ice.. and temps in the 30's... typical weather extremes for April in this region. You get teased.. then spanked.

Oops! Really. A serious head slapper.
I just realized that in my ridiculous haste, I've built positive incidence into the stabilizer. Probably 2 or 3 degrees. I hope I don't have to do my official with it rolling on the ground for the whole flight.
Is there any rule that it has to actually leave the ground?

Test run. 18.8k with a 5x4 prop, yet to be cut down. I cut the stab out and re-set it with zero incidence. I feel better now. The old Tach Race engine runs great!

I walked across the street and staked my 42' handle in center circle, walked it around, and have plenty of room. The tree trimmers did a good job. The camera, plane and equipment are parked in my back yard, just waiting for the wind to die with the sinking Sun. Launch will take place in the next 45 minutes or thereabouts.

Re: CEF speed contest Design Discussions
The video camera is in my hand. In the bag are three propellers, fuel, syringe, handle and lines, glow igniter, stooge line, rags, etc. It's all still in the bag. I'm po'd, nothing ever goes on at that church after kindergarten lets out at 6:00. Choir practice. I'd have given them a sour note for sure if I cranked up that Cox. It was blue sky and 5 mph wind.
Tomorrow's forecast could definitely be a go: 60% precip/10 mph. I'll be ready.
If it's a total scrub even through a possible extension, I'll fly it anyway and post a video for entertainment, and fly sooner next year.

Re: CEF speed contest Design Discussions
Don't worry Rusty,
I have made 3 attempts at getting airborne. Each one a dismal failure!
Last night winds were perfect and once again I did a nose over. This time I cracked the fuse lengthwise from the mount all the way to the bellcrank.
Something is very wrong with my plane. I am far away from home so that is compounding the problem. I have spread out my gear as my release guy said the engine torque is pulling the plane over and I plan on moving the gear forward a little bit more. I have no doubt it will fly once it gets off the ground. I have busted 3 props so I am running out.
I will re-attack Sunday. I have already spoken with Jim.
Ron

Re: CEF speed contest Design Discussions
I tried to get mine in the air the day before yesterday in my neighbour's garden. It was quite a failure. Scale landing gear and 1/2A don't go together well. As soon as the tail lifted, the prop touched the ground. There can be 2 reasons for that:
1. The landing gear is too low. Before, I held the plane in a for me horizontal position and it seemed to be OK. Probably, my impression of "horizontal position" does not match reality.
2. As with Ron's plane, the nose goes down. Then the landing gear is too far back.
As an emergency, I replaced the wheels and fixed 60mm diamater doped cardboard wheels to get a bigger ground clearance. I also fixed a M6 nut on the tail. I hope the CG is still OK. On the grass, I laid out wooden planks for approx. 3m. I think this might not be enough in length. How far a distance such a model usually rolls before taking off?
I'll try again today.
Lieven

Re: CEF speed contest Design Discussions
I just checked the weather. If I can be on my feet by 3:00 I think I can beat the rain moving up the Eastern Seaboard. The Kindergarteners won't mind if they're inside. The winds will be about 11, but that's workable if the rolloff from the buildings will let me keep it close enough to the ground. Determined to go. I'm thinking mine will jump up pretty quickly. It's balanced, wheels are forward and it's a featherweight.

Thanks for the tip. I have a stupid amount of props at home, just not many here. I wish I had brought more, but I rarely break props these days. I should be ok once I figure out why my plane is being obtuse.

Lieven,
This is how I launched from a board. You'll notice the far end is lifted up about 6" to act as a ramp. Think of it as an aircraft carrier!
If you still have no luck go ahead and hand launch.
