I would rather keep it glow.pkrankow wrote:Could call it a diesel conversion class. Swing bigger prop so more potential thrust. Steeper pitch is needed or it won't go any faster than the theoretical screw speed at the unloaded limit. Bigger stunt ships use this concept to slow the downhill portion of maneuvers.
Video is probably the best way.

This should be planned for the 1st weekend in April... and titled "The April Fools Speed Event"
Northern weather should be mild by then.

Any restrictions in props?
I have some 4.5x7 props, but I doubt everyone has those.

No restrictions, will a reedie spin those without bogging down?Cribbs74 wrote:Any restrictions in props?

Eventually it will move fast enough to unload... or run out of fuel.JPvelo wrote:No restrictions, will a reedie spin those without bogging down?Cribbs74 wrote:Any restrictions in props?

Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
Is the elevator set for minimal throws, like maybe 5 deg. up and 5 deg. down?
Jim, should we start a new thread for our technical discussions?

Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
I would set the elevator that way and maybe have only a half elevator like most speed planes. Each pilot can set up their plane however they want though. I would like this yo be a designers contest just as much as an engine contest.RknRusty wrote:Is the elevator set for minimal throws, like maybe 5 deg. up and 5 deg. down?

I like the separate thread idea. Maybe a side bar with the rules and sign up like Jason suggested and then a tech thread.

April is good but we need about a two week official flight window to compensate for weather nation/world wide.roddie wrote:This should be planned for the 1st weekend in April... and titled "The April Fools Speed Event"

Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
I could see this as a Fun Excuse to build a couple Musciano/Scientific Models. I'll admit stupidity up-front in that I'm not sure just how to calculate the area of a tapered wing, so I might need some help in crunching the numbers to make sure they're legal.
Figure that it's also possible that some of the Scientific Models fans have already done this for specific models.
Also, would wheel fairings be allowed if they exist on the full-scale...say...a Cassutt Racer?

Kim,
If you can find out the wing area of the 1:1 model, and you know the scale you're building, then the answer is readily available, isn't it?

If the full scale has wheel fairings then yes.Kim wrote:I could see this as a Fun Excuse to build a couple Musciano/Scientific Models. True...if it were exact scale...which I'm sure is the case with some models/kits. I'm probably over thinking it, as I tend to do with lots of things in the early morning !!

Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
Trapezoidal method works well. Divide the wing into convenient trapezoids then crunch those areas.

Here is a great resource for calculating wing things:

Here's another:

Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
Our speedsters have to be profile, right? Are any Muciano planes profile? The fastest thing I ever built prior to the Tee Dee/Satan was a Musciano Little Devil hollow log.Kim wrote:I could see this as a Fun Excuse to build a couple Musciano/Scientific Models. Yep, profile. Full rules are at the bottom of the first page of the thread.RknRusty wrote:Our speedsters have to be profile, right? Are any Muciano planes profile? Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
I'll have to look. I THOUGHT there was a Mustang and Cassutt Racer that were profile. There is, for sure an Aracobra that is profile but has a built-up wing.RknRusty wrote:Our speedsters have to be profile, right? Are any Muciano planes profile? Still, even if the original was a hollow log, you might be able to use the plan sheet to make up a profile fuse...

Just open it up to profile and full fuse.

Sorry, didn't mean to muddy the waters...just thinking out loud. The profile plan will keep it fair and square...
