CEF speed contest anyone?
My new mouse racer kit got me thinking. Anyone for a CEF speed contest? I was thinking profile SCALE models, reed valve engines made up of original cox parts with the exception of the glow head and newly manufactured killer bee cranks. 17 inch minimum wingspan, 12 inches for biplanes,at least two wheels, take off from the ground and the ten fastest FLYING laps win it. 45 foot lines, max 30% nitro. We can fly whenever it thaws in the cold parts of the country if we have participants there.
So, any takers?

Maybe.
I got a couple simple ideas.

That's what I'm using! As long as it's a reed valve you can use whatever tank or bladder system you want.pkrankow wrote:Maybe.

I'll do it. My Li'l Satan is the fastest thing I've got with a Cox on it.
Hey, speaking of the Satan, I just got a brand new Brodak Li'l Satan kit. If I ever get finished working on these 35 size planes I'll build that for my NEW Tee Dee .049!

I was hoping you'd be in! Looking for reed valve profile scale with landing gear. I was thinking along the lines of Reno unlimited warbird type racers.RknRusty wrote:I'll do it. My Li'l Satan is the fastest thing I've got with a Cox on it.

I'm thinking a slab skyray with the second wheel out on the wingtip, just for the contest.

Oh, yeah, I see. I didn't read closely enough. I'll have to build something to fit that bill. I do have that old busted T-28 profile collecting dust, but It might be too heavy. Maybe I can talk my neighbor out of his P-51 that he started and never finished in my shop. I could propose he let me build it for him if I get to borrow it for this racing event.......... Nah, shoot, it's a beam mount. I'll think of something.JPvelo wrote:I was hoping you'd be in! Looking for reed valve profile scale with landing gear. Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
Sounds like fun!
Just throwing this out there, tell me no and it won't hurt the one feeling I have.
What about making it a AMA Mouse I race? The rules a already in place. We can just make it a Postal Mouse I race.

Small, light, and most of all fast. We have pretty good knowledge of these little engines here, let's see how fast we can go. I basically lifted the rules from 1/2a proto profile speed, with the scale part thrown in for fun. Minimum span 17 inches, minimum area 45 square inches. The smaller you build the faster you'll go. The kind of plane you can build in a weekend. When I say scale it need not be perfect, but if you're going to call it a sea fury it needs to look like a sea fury. Paint it however you like, it's a racer.

Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
thats a good idea, takes away the 8'' wingspan rocketship, but it makes it easy/simple.
Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
The only reason I say no is that not everyone has a good pit man, I know I don't. Let's just do an all out speed dash, no timing pit stops or conserving fuel.duke.johnson wrote:Sounds like fun!

Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
This is sounding like a great way to break up the Winter blues. Great idea, JP! I'm all in. If it's 40' lines I might even be able to do it at the church if I keep it under 10' off the grass. I'll stand by for your official posting of class details and restrictions. Now I wanna know just how fast I can turn laps and still stand up.
Good grief, I hope you haven't just spurred me into a new branch of the C/L hobby.
Rusty

Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
Okay here's the rules for The CEF Profile Scale Reed Speed event:
Models will be of an actual aircraft type and must be recognizable as the subject being modeled. The model may be painted/covered in the scheme of your choosing, the paint/covering does not need to replicate an actual aircraft.
Minimum wingspan 15 inches, biplanes 12.5 inches, minimum wing area 45 square inches, minimum length 12 inches. Length is measured from the face of the prop drive plate to the end of the fuselage.
Engine cowlings are not only permitted, they are encouraged to enhance the scale appearance of the model. The cowling must be open in back, streamlined fairings will not be permitted. "Cheek blocks" will not extend more than 1 inch past the back of the firewall.
All controls, bellcrank, leadouts, and pushrod will be exposed.
The model will have a fixed landing gear with at least two main wheels.
Any .049/.051 reed valve engine assembled of cox parts or reproduction parts of the type sold by Cox International and ExModel Engines will be permitted. Any style glow head or glow plug may be used.
Engines may be of the integrated tank "Bee" type or use an external tank or bladder.
Fuel will have a maximum nitromethane content of 30%.
Models will be flown on lines that are 42 feet from the handle to the centerline and timed for 10 laps (1/2 mile) after becoming airborne and the engine has had a chance to "unload".
You may submit more than one entry but each entry must have its own engine, no swapping engines from model to model.
I think that covers it, if missed anything let me know and we will figure it out. When do we want to fly? I was thinking February initially but a lot of the country will still be frozen so I am open to suggestion.

Re: CEF speed contest anyone?
How do we limit whipping and walking a circle that makes the plane fly a smaller circle? I doubt anybody is going to put a post in for a fixed speed run.
Although doing this RTP style might be helpful as I am my own pit person.

I agree, it's the only feasible way. What's to stop someone from using shorter lines? We gotta go on trust. We could submit video like this if everyone agrees:Kim wrote:HONOR SYSTEM !!!!!

Could call it a diesel conversion class. Swing bigger prop so more potential thrust. Steeper pitch is needed or it won't go any faster than the theoretical screw speed at the unloaded limit. Bigger stunt ships use this concept to slow the downhill portion of maneuvers.
Video is probably the best way.
