Well, I sent the seller a message last night asking if they would open it up and take a picture of the insides. No reply yet. $550 is a lot for a Cox engine, I nearly fell off my chair when I saw a Venom sell for over $700 a few years back on eBay.

I sent a similar question as well.

It really is amazing to see some of the prices these engines go for!

The seller didn't want to open it up to avoid damaging the screws and gasket.

exactly! the only rr1s I have is one I had since I was a kid and a few I have picked up over the past years at swap meets and whatever I would never pay anything over $150 for a cox engine with the exeption of the nffs 051 medallion, but those dont even sell for that much. The last one i seen was listed for $99 buy it now and it didn't even sell that was like 2 years ago tho. Hell, i'm married, I have been for 36 years. She keeps to her crap just like I keep to my engines.

There's pictures of the inside of the RR-1 posted at the bottom of the page now. http://cgi.ebay.com/COX-RR-1-NEW-BOX-RR-1-/330592753923?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4cf8dd1903 It actually doesn't look fake!

ok, seriously, i have a theory how the engine got together:
Production manager: hey, frank , have we already got the gold anodized crank cases for our rr1?
Frank: sorry leroy, they have a shortage of leprechaun pots of gold right now, could take another week or so.
Leroy r. cox: alright, uh, then lets use the babe bee cank cases for now, i'm sure that we'll get em tomorrow.
it happened a lot that cox didnt have all the right parts available because the parts where anodized by a seperate
company somewhere in santa anna.

well, there was a small line of black widows, wich were produced completely unanodized, and from what i know, they
are very rare and go for a high price on ebay, if they are authentic.

Yes, the stoneway group makes quite remarkable little pieces of jewelery...look at their rr-1 restorations!

I was the one who bought this engine. It is real and I've been searching for this version for quite some time.
It is perhaps the rarest of all production Cox engines prior to 1969. If my research is correct, it was only manufactured for six months.
If you're interested, I can post my findings here.

Sure, that would be really neat. You should join the forum, you sound like a major collector! I knew that if it was real, it must be really rare! I even have a few toy collector books that don't list any version without the ribbing and one book that says that there are no known without the ribbing (I think I posted something about that earlier in this topic). Congratulations for finally finding this engine!
