I Broke My Thing !!!!!

I Broke My Thing !!!!!
Well, not REALLY badly, but badly enough....
In spite of a fairly strong wind out of the south, I took my usual Sunday trip to my Uncle Wayne's house for a little flying out of his corn field-surrounded backyard.
With the corn stalks nearing ten feet in height, I wasn't going to risk a sailplane landing, and so, broke out "The Thing"...a three-channel lifting body, powered by an old O.S. .10.
Wayne's yard is also right next to stand of trees that generate plenty of turbulence with a south wind spilling over them, and as we all know, lifting bodies HATE turbulence ! It will fly with amazing stability in calm air, but in wind, rocks back and forth just like the one in the intro to Six Million Dollar Man...except a bit faster. The sub-rudder can roll it on it's back in a blink, with it performing a pretty decent Split-S all by itself.
I DID pull off one wild flight that landed where I intended, but the second white-knuckle attempt ended when the O.S. croaked (probably from air-sickness), and the Thing performed it trademark roll/dive into the corn.
Luckily, it just sheared it's left fin and tore a little monokote.
We wisely retreated to the porch swing to reminisce about the old days and the better days to come !!!

Speaking of OS, I got a bunch of OS engines and an Enya today, Mostly .35s and a .40. I'm gonna have to get you guys to teach me all about them.

Kim, that Thing looks wicked! Shame it crashed. I may try and build me one for a 10 La Diesel.

Thanks Rolla! It's been smacked before, and WILL be again. It's actually a good-natured flying machine...just not in wind! I knew better...but wanted to fly something that could drop into Wayne's little flying field.Godsey3.0 wrote:Kim, that Thing looks wicked! Shame it crashed. Re: I Broke My Thing !!!!!
that thing is little... I have an OS .10FP N.I.B., that I bought in 1993 for an Ace "All Star Bipe" kit...that is also N.I.B... I purchased the OS "remote needle" valve/bracket for that engine. Have you ever used one?
Watching you fly your thing, made me want to get that OS running!

Re: I Broke My Thing !!!!!
Yeah, they work great! I used one for almost forever on my Sig Kadet Mk I: "Mud Dabber" ...up until it met with an unfortunate glider-towing incident...
I couldn't find a good photo of it, but it was REAL nice having way back behind the engine, and the .35 ran exactly like it did before the installation.
I've got a couple more of those remote needles stashed somewhere....probably be a good idea to put one on the Thing's O.S. 10 ...considering that even under good conditions, it lands by sliding along on it's nose...

Good to know! I wonder if OS's remote could be modified to fit "other" engines?
Is the "Thing" a kit... or did you design/scratch-build it?

Don't know why you couldn't use it other brands...guess it would make a good experiment.
The Thing is built from Model Aviation Plans...not sure which year, but in the 90's. You can probably find it in their directory. I just enlarged mine from the magazine copy, using the time-tested T.L.A.R. to estimate how big it ought to be.
I built three Things...the first, a smaller version than the yellow one, with my best-running .020 for power. It cruised around nicely with this little engine (much to my amazement), but it was just a little TOO serene. So, I put a Tee Dee .049 on it, since the firewall was plenty big enough.
I was then treated to an unbridled, vertical climbing missile that had me measuring it's fuel-on-board so it wouldn't just leave the county. And yes...I just HAD to cover it in Charcoal Grey Monokote...with no stripes to denote top or bottom...so it was ALWAYS a question whether or not it was banked toward you or away from you, though it's rapidly changing size usually gave it away. It STILL survives, and is slated for yet another T.D., but with one of Bernie's Throttle assemblies riding along to let me better choose my level of stress...
I built another smaller one with a fixed sub-rudder and elevons using a home-made sliding servo mixer for my Cannon radio, and powered it with an .010. It would roll faster than I could see (and this was fifteen years ago...when I could see a lot better!). I built it with a deeper "V" in the body and it had a nasty habit of snapping on landing flair and dumping my .010 in the dirt, so it got retired.
The currently flying yellow one WILL do some weird stuff when everything is right: If you dive it straight at the ground, and then quickly (but smoothly) pull in hard elevator, it will rotate to level, loosing all of it's vertical speed, then cruise away in slow, level flight. Weird stuff....
