Got a buch of parts the other day
Hey, All. I got a bunch of parts the other day to complete a couple of things and to have some spares. In the parts lot there were a bunch of old handles and a couple of things I wasn't sure of, so I'll ask here.
First, there was a package of hub nuts. Anyone know what these were for?
Second, there was a backplate with a heat shield. I've seen the engines on eBay and I've always wondered what models had the heat shield and why:
And a handle question. Here are three handles from different eras. Similar but for the cutout, which I assume is for line storage? The one on the left I assume to be the oldest. The upper right has the cutout, but is shaped like something snaps in there? The lower right just has a straight slot, but it has a tab sticking out. What's the purpose of the tab?
Lastly is what I assume to be the last version of the cox handle. They finally got it right by angling it for a more natural wrist position, but I wish they made it for adult size fingers instead of kid fingers. It has the little snap out plastic piece. I assume that is what goes into the cutout at the top of the handle? What's the proper use of this?

Hi Mark,
I had such a backplate and shield on the engine of my Cox Super Chipmunk.

Re: Got a buch of parts the other day
Some RTF's came with a throttle band around the cylinder ports, and I remember seeing one of these handles with a wire bent so as to provide a thumb pad on one side of the handle, passing through the notch to form a slightly longer stem on the other side. The throttle line was tied to this stem, and pilot could control the engine by pressing on one side with his thumb, with the stem pulling on the throttle line.
Hope this makes sense....

The little snap-out piece is part of a self-launching system. On the PT's and some others, you'll notice a little "Hook" at the rear of the bellcrank. An anchor string was tied to the little hole in the slotted piece, and the slot was slipped over the hook on the end of the bellcrank, and held the running plane in place.
When the pilot gave the handle a slight punch of "down", the bellcrank would slide inside the body, which pushed off the loop, and released the plane.
Once again, hope this makes sense...

I remember the self-launch feature of the PT-19 using the bellcrank, but the NIB PT-19 I have uses a little wire anchor instead of a plastic one. Thanks for the explanation.
One other thing in the bundle is this packet. I think I saw one used as an engine stand on an eBay auction once, but I figured it was just an improvisation. Does anyone know what the actual use of these parts are?

That looks a lot like a set of contacts that get fastened to a wooden spring type cloths pin for use as a glow head ignition. Might also be a mis-use, that I recall seeing growing up in my dad's flight box...I could be wrong.

I know the Dog Fighter series planes (ie. the Fokker DR-1, Sopwith etc..) used those heat shields.batjac wrote:
