Cox Engine of The Month
engine run time, Tee Dee

engine run time, Tee Dee
How long does a Tee Dee .049 run on ?/? oz fuel?
I know the vast number of variables are trying, but I am looking for the ballpark to decide whether I want 1 oz, 3/4 oz, 1/2 oz, or 1/3 oz.
The application in this case is pulling a glider up, I am unsure what prop to select too. I think I want 5 minutes of run time.

I get roughly 2 minutes on 3/4oz. But that's under forced bladder pressure with a wide bored venturi, so a stocker will probably get more.... that wasn't a bit of help, was it. I'll be flying this weekend, so I'll use the stopwatch on my phone and get you some better answers.

Re: engine run time, Tee Dee
I'm with Rusty Phil.
Unthrottled these little things guzzle fuel like it's going
Out of fashion. I got 15 mins on a 2oz tank on my Killa
B'stard when it was throttled but less than half that
When then throttle servo packed up and it was set wide open.
I got a little over 2 mins on the stand with an 051 and Cox
Tank mount not sure what the capacity is but I'll measure it later.

The .051 on my 2 Meter Bird of Time consistently gets just short of 4 1/2 minutes on an unpressurized one ounce tank.

Wow, that's quite a difference form the hotrod setup.Kim wrote:The .051 on my 2 Meter Bird of Time consistently gets just short of 4 1/2 minutes on an unpressurized one ounce tank.
I have a stocker I can put on a test stand and with a graduated syringe that I'll set up as a tank and click off the split times as it crosses each increment. If I can find the time today I'll run a test for you and put it on video.
Phil, tell me what prop you'll be swinging so I can match my RPM to yours.

I should have also mentioned that this time is made with a black 6-3 prop. The 5-3's just don't seem to haul the B.O.T. quite as high. Don't have any tach numbers on it.

6-3 grey Cox or 7-3 if it'll swing it. (I have a couple APC free-flight props) Right now I only have 15% nitromethane fuel.
I think I'll order the plastic 1 oz clunk tank from Bernie. 4 minutes sounds like a good time to me.
My glider is not nearly as pretty as Kim's. It is on a rebuilt fuse that has been rebuilt (no that wasn't redundant, the nose is a golf ball)

I have a 6x3, I'll use that. I went out to the shop and liberated a Medallion from an old radial mount. Later today I'll turn it into a Tee Dee and do the fuel test. I've been panning to turn this one into a Tee Dee for a while now.

Sorry Phil I lied.....
I just checked and I got 1.38 out of the 051 on the Cox tank mount.
It was running a grey 6X3 and It holds 10cc of squirt so I guess
1/3rd oz give or take. A whole OZ should give you close to 5 mins.

PRETTY ???!!!! Man, I got to remember NOT to post any high-res photos of my poor ole battle-weary B.O.T. !!!!!!!!
One other note...if you negate installing the "clunk" feature of the tank, and use a rigid tube to the bottom, you'll then be able to kill the engine by looping the plane with a momentary pause at the top.
I can pretty much guarantee you that you will eventually hook into a boomer that will have you wanting badly to shut off that little screamer!

It's all relative.

I used to slope glide this, it is my first RC aircraft, and I learned on my own. I know, it shows. I am considering rebuilding the fuse, again, but this has character, and I'm going to probably crash it anyways.
I really need to get that RC simulator ordered. Payday I think.

Re: engine run time, Tee Dee
I got two types I use now. These little "Key FOB" cameras are really light, and the HD from them is pretty startling (in my opinion) for such tiny gadgets. You can make up a rig like this, using an arrow shaft boom and micro servo to manipulate it, or forget the servo and boom, and just tape the little sucker where ever you want.
I think the clarity of the stills captured from these cameras are more shocking than the video.
There's no view-finder, so you just got to experiment...OR...hook it up to a portable device to see what the cam sees.
I also use the "Flip" Type cameras which have a view finder LCD screen. They're a bit heavier, but the 2 Meter B.O.T. still hauls them with authority, and the 3 Meter B.O.T. hardly knows they're on board.
For a while, I tried to use my "Fancy" Camera, my Sony Handi cam, but the 3 Meter B.O.T. about busted a gut hauling it, and the video wasn't THAT much better, so the Handi Cam got retired back to doing weddings and birthdays.
Bottom line...no matter WHAT...you MUST return the plane's center of gravity to it's original location, else you'll get video that's WAY more exciting than you intended !!!!
I use the little zip-lock packs we get our parts in from Matt and Bernie, and fine lead shot (got plenty laying around), and scotch tape them to the wing or tail to make sure the plane balances where it was originally.

Averages at a good 13-15 mins on 2 oz fuel in a R/C plane with no throttle...I use a ballon tank

Aw I apologize. I promised Tee Dee run time tests and never could get away to do it. I hope balogh 's answer helps.
