Re: Won a TD 049 thats a bit odd.
Well, the engine arrived today.
Its as immaculate as it looked in the pictures. Not a scratch or mark on it. Mounting lugs show it has never been used.
The cylinder on it is marked with a sideways 4 in one exhaust port. It also is ported with 1 boost port on each side. The thing that surprised me, is the transfer ports look normal, but the boost port is cut noticeably higher than the transfer port. I'm guessing this is the famous 'venom' style cylinder? The one that was supposed to be faster than the old double boost TD cylinder. It has SPI. Also, no ring on the lower piston, so its definitely an .049.
The prop on it is a Top Flight 7.4.. seems excessive for a TD. I'm a little worried about the crank end play, it seems a little too loose to me. I don't have a feeler guage, but I think it needs to be tightened up a little.
Anyway, very happy with the purchase and price I paid.
-edit- Oh, the instruction manual is dated 1995 below the engine parts list.

Sounds like you got a good engine!
Yes, the mid-90's boost porting extended beyond the bypass ports by a little bit on these TD #4 cylinders.
If the engine is new, I wouldn't worry much about the end-play. Some is normal, and you should be okay as long as it is not making any grooves in the backplate when everything is assembled.
