010 piston fit.. to lap or not to lap?, that is the question
I received a new 010 piston from ebay today, and it wont fit the cylinder, barely makes it past the ports and gets stuck, the piston was put into a normal envelope, no protection... im thinking it went through the rollers at the post office.. distorting it, i have 2 engines, one basically new, and both pistons/cylinders interchange, i did a quick and dirty check by putting a bright white led into the cylinder too see if i can see any light emanating from the sides which would point to a distorted piston, i didnt see anything it looked ok.
So should i lap it..? or just chuck it in the spares bin, and run my original piston, that works fine, but is on its way out.. im thinking the latter.
Thanks gentlemen.

Strange.
I was going to say you had a burr in the cylinder, but your original piston works correct?
Do you have dial calipers? You could check the roundness with those. Usually the cylinder wears before the piston.

I lapped a .010 cylinder when I got a replacement piston. Same situation as yours. It would not go past the ports. You must go slow and use 2000 grit wet/dry with oil. Did I mention to go slow!
Lap, flush clean and then test fit. Repeat process checking often. Took almost an hour but I got a running .010 out of the effort.
Good luck!

Cribbs74, I lent them out last week good timing...eh.. the cylinders are fine, im aware of the burring, i treat my engines with kid gloves. I was thinking it went through the rollers at the post.
Jason, thanks, wasnt aware of that, will run the original piston for now, once worn out, i will lap it, will check it again when i get my caliper gauge back.

I have had some success in sanding cylinders to match pistons with tight fits as well.

Never underestimate the power of Castor Oil to varninsh a cylinder. That said, if you use a bore brush or other method to devarnish the cylinder the original piston will probably not give as much compression. I say keep the new one for the day when or if your current piston gets too sloppy.

Thanks for the tips guys, yeah i remember the castor varnish, when i cleaned the cylinder bore and piston on my first engine, it lost quite a bit of compression, will keep this piston as a spare, as both engines appear to run fine.
Thanks again
