Heres a picture of my broken crank. I think with extreme care and finess, it could be repaired. (your right Ian) I'm sure somebody who knew what they were doing could repair it. Help!!!

It can probably be welded. I wonder if it can be balanced to withstand 27k.

Is that cast? It may be hard to weld.

Ebeneezer, I may be able to help, shoot me a PM.

Good point, I thought it was forged. I'm thinking Silver Solder. Flying

The cranks are made from steel and then heat treated.

A jeweler may be able to repair that... just a thought.

The jeweler might be the answer, and my mother inlaw has a pet jeweler. Only problem is it means talking to her.

The TD 010 crankshaft is fundementally weak and not produced using a quality of steel commensurate with its size.

There is no reason why this cannot be silver soldered (brazed) but it is not guaranteed and can be fraught with problems.

1. There needs to be a gap between the two parts for the silver solder .003 to .005 inch. This will alter the shape of the crankshaft slightly and this, combined with the solder overflow will need trimming by lathe.

2. Silver solder melts at 610-630 deg C. Therefore the crankshaft will need to be heated for this to happen. This will change the structure of the steel and has the potential to make it brittle.

3. It will require annealing after cleaning at around 232 deg C (450 deg F) for about 30 minutes to bring the metal to the correct hardness.

None of this can be guaranteed to work but it is better to try than discard something like this that is difficult to replace.

I would also reckon that it is probably around 12 hrs work to set up for and machine a new crankshaft and about 15 minutes to set up and complete the above.

Thanks for that Ian, It's great that you are aware of the work that would be involved and it makes complete sense to me. When you point out whats involved it sound an interesting, but not cost effective unless doing yuorself.

Just a thought if I could get a jeweler to silver solder it. I could maybe dress it off using my piller drill and my Dremmel as a cylindrical
grinder.
