Control lines
What test strength Spiderwire do you normally use for your 1/2A's? Does using this allow you to put a little more length in your flying lines because of less drag?

Re: Control lines
I use 10# line and have had the knot slip a few times in the absence of a palomer knot. It's never snapped during regular flight although I have had the prop cut it when out of control. I have heard of going down to 8# and as high as 30#
I think as long as you stay in that range you should be fine. Keep in mind the smaller the line the more prone it is to tangles when you lay them out. And lastly buy a color other than green as it disappears in the grass.

I've been using the 10 pound as well. No problems so far.

Re: Control lines
To answer your other question, go out as far as you can safely control the plane. I use 35' lines plus my arm so say 37' total and the lines stay nice and tight. I think Rusty goes out to 42' but don't quote me on that. He also uses a higher test than I do and he has no problems.

Re: Control lines
I have been using 10 lb power pro. Good luck finding high-vis colors!
The AMA rules spell out the recommendations for model and engine size vs line strength. They also recommend a doubled 5 turn uni-knot, you fold the end of the line over so 2 pieces of line are in the knot.

I have used the Palomar, doubled Palomar, doubled 5-turn uni knot, and doubled figure-8 loop successfully in power pro without slippage, even after getting bathed in castor, but don't have long-term results.
Leadouts on a fluted plastic "basher" airplane I tied doubled figure-8's and they are holding quite solid.

Re: Control lines
I use 30# Spiderwire but I will go lighter next time I make up a line set, 15# if I can get it. I also use some neon green 20# of a brand I can't recall right off. It all works well. The Spiderwire is the most supple but the hardest for me to tie. My lines are 40' plus my arm lemgth of 2". I'm going to make up a set of longer lines for my faster planes.

Wow!! They really look longer in the videos --- must be a macro lens.
