Full Fathom Five
Just a few piccies guys.
Mosta the donkey work now done, just gotta connect port aileron and mount mota/throttle.
With the Extreme it balances right on the money but I still think first flight will be with a black widow.
It's a little porkier than I'd have liked but it does have digi metal geared servo's that if I decide to swap
will shed 3/4oz straight away, along with perhaps junking the adjustable ball links 1/4oz and smaller battery
1/4 oz currently 220mah thinking of 120mah.
Hopefully will maiden this weekend.

If you want to save some weight get rid of the gear and put a bellcrank in it.
Just kidding, looks like fun John.

Re: Full Fathom Five
Hi Rusty, what you see there is 260grams in
New money. I reckon 275 with throttle servo
And a smidgeonette of fuel proofer.
I had really hoped for sub nine oz but given the
Amount of over engineering I've done I
Shouldn't grumble.
The original kit I bastardised was 22in w/s with
A projected AUW of 8 oz with TD 020
Up front. I scaled up by 1.18/ to accommodate an
049.

Hi Jon,
I remember your previous quote on what to do with an engine.

I have been waiting to learn how ever since and now I see how easy it is! A mere application of some parcel tape is all that is required!
I had used "Blu Tack" but the motors kept falling off! I will be away to the shop straight away.

Re: Full Fathom Five
The Extreme should haul 275g around pretty well, fast enough to be fun.

PS
Seriously though
Have any of you guys any experience running your radio's on 1s lipos?
Just another hair brained idea to shed a few grams....
PS
Mine's Futaba so no 'brown out' issues to worry about.

I think I may have made my own mind up........
On the left 220mah weighs 22 grams
On the right 130mah weighs 5 grams
Unless one of you screams 'don't do 3.7 volts'
I think it's a no brainer

Re: Full Fathom Five
john
if you want to guarantee no brown outs on 1s lipo try one of these(i love futaba but they can still brown out on 1s, i have seen it happen)
http://www.dimensionengineering.com/products/lvboost
actual weight of the one i have in front of me is 2.85g and it still has 180mm/7in of wires hanging out of it!
i havent used it yet, but have only heard good reports about them.
wire it into the rx only and power the servo straight from the battery for best results.
although i have heard of guys running servos and rx through the lvboost, the current required could be a little high(try it and see)
cheers

Re: Full Fathom Five
Remember that with the voltage converter, the battery is no longer 130mAh, but much less, below 100mAh (even assuming 100% effectiveness of the converter).

Re: Full Fathom Five
Cheers Ado, I was thinking about similar.
I did loose a model early on in my re entry to hobby.
It just flew away and I put it down to low batt or disconnected
Rx batt/ it was an old 35meg Futaba though.
Dirk yep I know but it's only going to have enough fuel to
Fly a couple mins and I'm a 'serial' on site charger so I'll
Just top up after each flight.
Oh oh tempting fate.... It's going to fly more than once

dirk
good point on the mah of the battery.
i havent been around herre for very long, but im sure john is the type of guy that will bench test everything thoroughly before taking it out for the maiden. we all do that dont we?...
....john, please make sure you get it on video... looks like it will be a heap of overpowered fun
cheers
a
p.s.
when you take it out for a maiden,
by making sure you only have one battery and leave the charger at home..
... will gaurentee it lands safely.
(has to work... when i go fully prepared... it usually doesnt end well)

Re: Full Fathom Five
I have used the small 150mAh batteries before but I prefer to use the 2/3 AAA ones, at about 450mAh. That way you can be sure to get several flights in without worrying about the batteries. The total weight can still be around 10oz. I have a Yellow Jacket with three channels that weights about 10.3oz with a Norvel .061 in the front, it moves around quite nicely...

Re: Full Fathom Five
OK
Flight ready with Dragonfly tank/back end, 5 servos, 130 mah 1s lipo (poss the 300mah might turn up in tomorrows
post) All Up Weight 285 grams.
Ie almost exactly 10 oz's.
I reckon that the 'Extreme' is putting out at least as much power as a Tee Dee (78 watts)
So I reckon on 125/130 Watts per pound, not my usual 250+ but it should still be spritely.
I held the engine and threw/shook it around to simulate 3d nonsense and it continued to run well.
I think it was Kris who suggested the dragon fly set up.
I works very well albeit at the cost of weight.
If the rain and snow holds off tomorrow it'll maiden.
Cameraman Glen will be there so hopefully there'll be a vid.

Re: Full Fathom Five
Yes! Looking forward to it.
I'll have my camera out tomorrow too. Re-testing the Li'l Satan with it's newest Tee Dee, the maiden of my new Baby Streak with it's Big Mig, and of course my old faithful Streak which I may now call the Lead Sled since it weighs at least an ounce more than the new Baby.
Weather forecast is Sunny and 78F, with 9mph wind. Maybe the trees will break the breeze.

Re: Full Fathom Five
Ok ok it's time for those 'told you so' comments...
While a 1s lipo will work fine in a centrally heated office, outside
In f f. F. F ffffreeeeeeezing temps it's another story.
It was so cold that it took nearly 20 mins to get the beastie
To run by which time the throttle servo kept closing due to
Low voltage.
Guess who forgot to take the nimh as a spare.....
So no Maiden.
But on the plus side engine was happy at 19.5k with
Standard low comp head, 20% and model wanted
To leap skywards.
Ah well next week....
