Cox 09 and 15 piston reset tool.

So I have the reset forming tool complete. I ended up with a 60 degree angle for the contact area that resets the ball socket. This is a best guesstimation and may or may not be ideal. I then used a center drill with a 82 degree angle for relief of the ball on the end of the rod.

Here is a before shot of the TD 15 piston that was in my first version TD 15 I got a few months back. As you can see someone took a punch to try to reset it.



This is after using the reset tool. All the punch marks have all but disappeared. The ball socket does not stick in the tight spots any more and the movement is smooth. I seemed to have resurrected the ball socket of this piston.



I then reset a TD 15 piston I recently got that had about .025" of ball socket slop. It was pretty bad. It tightened up the ball socket but the piston no longer has SPI and doesn't come flush to TDC on the cylinder. The ball socket was hammered out and the entire assembly is shorter now.



It does take considerable amount of force to reset a 15 piston but it seems to work pretty good.

Maybe you can still get good enough compression if you just use one head shim.

I had SPI nearly disappear on an .049 once. I wrapped the skirt with tape and chucked it in the drill press. Spun it and made a black line around the bottom with a sharpie, just for reference, then held a small file to it. I spun it until the mark was filed off, and SPI was back to normal. Slightly lighter too. It's the piston in my "Mouse Racer project" Black Widow, if you're familiar with that thread from last Winter.

Here is a pic of the 09 reset tool anvil I made tonight. I used a 15 blank I had cut so that is why it is a little more massive than it needs to be but it will not affect peformance.



Will make the other half next week.

OK I finished the reset tool tonight. I used the shank of a grade five 1/2" bolt to make it. It will be hard enough to where it will not deform when striking with a hammer. This was harder to cut with my tooling and was difficult to get a good finish.

I stamped 09 COX on the bottom of the anvil.



I reset a TD 09 piston with it and it worked great.

I have to say, the .09 tool I received is one stout tool. It also does a great job in the reset department. I reset two of my .09's last night and had no issues at all. I also still have SPI so I guess I caught it in time.

i was just complementing you on your work and your effort to help out the forum guys. no .09 or .15's in my stable. mostly medallion .049, .051, (the ghost .051), TD .049, .051 and a golden bee and babe bee here and there. and of course the Atwood's. 3/4 of an outboard .049 from 1954 and a couple of atwood .049 plane engines purchased recently.
