OLD CA and REPAIRS
Hi,
Yep sometime we "heat" CA by trying to cut through it with Dremel tools. You get that nice nasty wiff of CA irritation. Ventilation? ITs a good thing (said in Martha Stewarts voice)

Heating cyano in general will not generate usualy cyanide, but not good to heat it too high for other reasons , it is often heated to develop fingerprints to give the higher vapour required
When you heat cyano, it distills off giving cyanoacrylate vapour that can condense as liquid cyano.... before it gets hot enough to crack to give any cyanide groups it will go off as cyanoacrylate vapour , if you use a flame to burn it there is a slight chance of it producing cyanide in certain conditions but its not likely.
The cyano vapour isnt good though, as its just as irritant as cold cyano vapour, but there will be more in the air so hazards are greater than with cold cyano
The glue that does generate cyanide when burnt is isocyanate based glue such as foaming polyurethane ones ( as they used to use to make foam cushions ) , but there are no isocyanates in cyanoacrylate at all, even the dust from cured foaming polyurethane glue is toxic

Do you know if CA fumes released while gluing will adhere to surfaces such as polycarbonate eyeglass lenses or react with the coatings, as I mentioned in my earlier post? Or does it have to be heated to do that?

nah, its usually a gas that you can't see, i never had anything stick to my glasses, even when i set it on fire with a lighter.

beez:
How it it that you know your supposition as a fact.
Why did you set fire to your glasses?

cyano vapour will stick to things just as well as the glue does, its just the hotter it gets the more vapour there is , the fogging you see on shiny objects near cyano is the cyano fumes curing in the air and landing as sticky partially cured cyano dust,
The smell you can smell when using it is partially polymerised cyano, odourless cyano has a larger molecule and lower vapour pressure so doesnt float about as much as the standard ethyl cyanoacrylate ( all odourless ca still smells and fogs if heated )
Cyano vapour normally will not travel far from the liquid adhesive as it is so reactive it cures due to moisture in the air and then lands as the vapour sets due to having higher density when set

And it's always humid in my shop, rarely less than 60%. Thanks for the replyMiniatureAircraftFactory wrote:cyano vapour will stick to things just as well as the glue does, its just the hotter it gets the more vapour there is , the fogging you see on shiny objects near cyano is the cyano fumes curing in the air and landing as sticky partially cured cyano dust,
