Re: My own design/Flight report...
I've used small woven fiberglass tape, about 1/2" wide since I started building. It's hard to make it pretty, but I have never had a hinge failure. I glue it to the wood with regular old airplane glue, using the over and under method and leave a little gap so it has room to work.deanthree5 wrote: Thanks for all the comments everyone.
No I don't fly on my patio, the table was in the yard; we had just got it out from storage...my wife was not happy with me for sure.
What kind of cloth does everyone use or do you use the ones from a kit?I had a serious fail there and want to fix it first.I do think Rusty is right I was tail heavy but it was flyable. The tails lack of response after glue was my biggest issue on flight 2.Help please I am really frustrated with the hinges, until this plane I have had no trouble with hinges.
Sewing is the preference of many experienced modelers, so I certainly won't argue with that.
Here's a pic of my Li'l Jumpin' Bean. The kit had some sort of other fabric, so I used it instead of fiberglass, but this is the general method. There was not enough of the material in the kit, so there are two of the fiberglass strips on the right side too.
The dark color is the mess I made by using a pen instead of a pencil to mark the wood. Live and learn.
But it looks fine after painting.

Re: My own design/Flight report...
Well I fixed my tail issues thanks for all the suggestions.I also fixed the c/g much better flyer. I wont be able to shoot a vid my camera is not working it records 2 seconds and quits "IDK"
I have one complaint about my design, not enough tail; will not loop.I would take any advice to remedy this...

Yet another example showing the need for a pre-flight before each and every flight. The lack of elevator throw after the hinge repair would been surely evident.
But this is how we learn from experience to be toughtful.

Or not enough wing, it's pretty narrow. You might want to add some balsa to extend it another inch or two. You don't want too much elevator throw either. If you get too much over 30 degrees up or down, the tail can stall. Hold the bellcrank at full up and push down on the elevator to make sure your rod isn't flexing.

re: elevator throw
On my recently completed "Baby Ringmaster" I have 45 degrees of elevator throw in either direction but I would caution that be a bit much for the inexperienced CL pilot.
To get more elevator movement DECREASE the distance between the control rod on the elevator horn and the hinge pivot point. (The opposite, INCREASE the distance to decrease the throw)
Inexperienced CL pilots should start with LESS throw rather than MORE until they gain the confidence to make the plane more sensitive to conntrol inputs. The control handle is also a factor; large handles make the plane more sensitive and smaller less so.
On some planes where bellcrank adjustments are also possible this too may be adjusted to suit the pilot's skill level. (Pesonally I enjoy flying moderately "touchy" CL planes.
