I have been looking for this engine for years and have never seen one for sale previously:

I am surprised (no, truly shocked) that the auction ended with such a low price (I had expected bids to substantially exceed $1,000), seeing that the more ubiquitous RR1 routinely pulls over $500.

This was essentially the first (quasi) "real" Cox engine ever manufactured.

Does anyone have more info on the engine? Quantities manufactured, etc?

You got that orange product engine with the really fine thread needle that wa so fine the running vibrations would strip the threads?

lol I forget what it's called.
It looks normal, except it has an orange backplate and I think orange NV cap.

I think the orange backplate was used on several product engines. The color was chosen to signal the change to 80 threads/" from 120 thread/" on the productionline.

So, am I correct in the assumption that there is very little information available re. the O-Fourty-Five?

After all, this was the first engine that cox manufactured.

Interestingly, they are both what would have to be called 'historically interesting'. Orange backplate product motor, less so.

I believe this was Cox's entry into model cars. It was smaller and more affordable than the hotly contested larger cars. If I understand correctly, the crankcase/gearbox was made by Cox, and the piston/cylinder was made by Anderson. The p/c was from the Spitzy .045 aircraft engine.

George, I may be wrong, but I would have thought the O-Forty-Five preceded the Spitzy. The Anderson Baby Spitfire .045 cylinder looks to be a dead ringer for the O-Forty-Five. I believe the Baby Spit came out in ’49, the Spitzy later. I’m going on memory, but a buddy and myself saved up for a K&B Infant, (the original ½ A) but when we went to buy one the guy at the hobby shop told us that he had just received a new engine (the Baby Spit) that was way better then the Infant. (We went with it and it was a great little engine.) I’m pretty sure the Baby Spit was the first (1/2 A) engine to follow the Infant. Then followed the Wasp .049, Atwood .049, etc. The Baby Spitfire and the Spitzy may have shared the same P/C assy so it may be a nit.

My research shows that this was the first engine Cox ever made (1949).

The cylinder head, cylinder, piston and connecting rod were purchased from Mel Anderson, and were from the Spitzy .045.

Cox then followed up with a similar looking O-Sixty engine (the larger bore cylinder/piston also from Mel Anderson).

From what I gather I am extremly fortunate to have acquired a new one for only $325.

The communication with Mud on the Black tank SBJ was from me, I sent it to him as I thought it was kind of amusing, as the ebay seller was quoting Sitter's book...a classic example of 'if its published it must be fact!'

Guys, Dan Sitter knows a thing or two about Thimble-Drome products, no denying that, but he doesn't know everything (an example is the RR-1, Dan says the first version never happened) I don't mean to slam Sitter, I would just like everybody to understand everything the guy says in his book is not 'gospel'!

I've done a fair amount of research myself and have been lucky to have personally known several long time MECA collectors over the last 10-12 years of collecting. I've also been in communication with 'Mud' for several years now and his expertise on these cool little engines is clearly in a class by itself.

Are you referring to the fact that Cox did not make the O-Fouty-Five, the O-Sixty, or both?

Re. the RR1, I have a handbook from Tim Dannels and Dan Sitter that not only shows the RR1 but also features a picture of it on the front cover. But then, you might be referring to yet another version?

Just to clarify: I know very little about the history of Cox and that I why I posted re. the O-Fourty-Five.
