I usually use gun blue to cover up any nicks/scratches or tool marks when cleaning up a cylinder. Most of the time I just dab on and wipe off. I did this with a cylinder last night and it actually removed blueing! What was once a real nice cylinder is now a tortoise shell of a mess. Any idea what happened? The original factory stuff usually holds up well but, this time not so much.

Mebbe someone else had already touched it up with something else, that doesn't play well with gun blueing?

Maybe guys.......maybe. I went ahead and sanded the cylinder with some ultra fine grit. I will re apply the blue solution this evening to bring back the uniformity it once had. Thanks for the replies everyone!

Keep us posted Ron. I know I have
a few cylinders that can use a little TLC.

I have blued a few Repro Civil War Revolver kits and they came out pretty nice but that was years ago. Never tried it on an engine cylinder before. What product do you use? and where did you get it??
