Cox Engine of The Month
I can't explain
I can't explain
No not the Who
But can any of you....
I keep seeing the following regurgitated on websites ,-
'Modelers could fly the same plane in two competition classes (i.e. A and 1/2A) simply by changing the engine.'
Is it just bods cutting and pasting stuff cos it sounds (almost) plausible or is there a class over there where 049's
are disallowed and only 051's are eligible?

Re: I can't explain
Just found this site, very good info...
http://www.clspeed.com/node/7
Looks like the "1/2A" cut off is a .0504 and "A" is .0505 to .15, per the AMA CL Speed Rules.

Re: I can't explain
1/2a is or was .049 and A was .05 and up or maybe there was an upper limit maybe .15 eg build an FF contest model and use it for and 1/2a by swapping tee dee .049 to .051, understand.
Re: I can't explain
So they actually had a lower size limit for
A speed event?
Crackers

Yeah it does seem odd but I am sure they had a reason.John Goddard wrote:So they actually had a lower size limit for

Re: I can't explain
I think that swapping engines to compete in 1/2A and A classes would have placed you at a significant disadvantage for the performance catagories, but would not be so disadvantageous in freeflight.

Re: I can't explain
It all comes down to aerodynamics and thrust/weight. A .051 will weight a lot less then a .15.
Re: I can't explain
Naw I guess I'm just one of lifes Dummies.
I still don't geddit.
Particularly then having a 'if it's a jet use what ever you like' policy.
I wonder if the tail (ie Cox) was wagging the dog on this or perhaps
it just wasn't very well thought through.

Re: I can't explain
It's bracket racing. From this size to this size is this bracket and from this size to this size is another bracket. Cox made the 051 to compete in the A while retaining the same case as 1/2A. It was a good move on their part, to get people interested in the next bracket of racing at a minimal cost. The next jump would be into a .09 or .15 Tee Dee and a whole new plane.

+1
Think it was more of a marketing blurb than anything: 1/2a freeflight kit could also be built for A class by using an .051. Can't imagine anyone would enter both classes at the same meet using a single airframe. Altho' it would be pretty funny watching someone chase thermals around the field while frantically trying to swap engines.
