Cox Engine of The Month
My PT-19 Upgrade

My PT-19 Upgrade
I got tired of looking at my PT-19 hanging from a wire and decided to get it going again. It had an ordinary old Surestart that barely lugged it around. To get it airborne off the short strip of sidewalk I have to whip it and jerk it like a kite to keep it from nosing over when it hits the grass. It groans and drones lumbering into the air so it can go round and round until it runs out of gas. And that's about it.
So, I had a barely used new engine that was a Killer Bee minus the KB crank, driveplate and head. It had been languishing in my parts box for a year or two. I also had a new KB crank and driveplate. I tore it down and did the usual cleaning and checking. I couldn't use the KB crank; it was one of those with the crooked prop-screw tap, so I polished the stock crank and put it all together. I used the original brass drive plate so I could put a cam and spring starter on it. I added one of those 5 fin head clamps with the plug insert.
On the test block it ran very well, I put 4 tanks of fuel through it. The first lean run sat on 21,500 RPM and bounced off of 22k a couple of times. Looks like I have a lucky good combination of parts... all from Bernie. Of course I ran into the house and got my camera and made a movie of the tach. It decided to only run 19.5k to 20.5k for the camera, but that's best, I don't want to wear it out in one season. I'll post the movie later, but here are a couple of pictures of the PT, the old battle axe.
Grrrr
It's a Woody! An unusual repair.
Flames. Actually I painted a JB Weld repair with red paint.
For my next trick... I'm going to make this plane fly a loop!

Re: My PT-19 Upgrade
You didn't mention what prop you are using. You might want to try a 6x2.
Good luck...lookin' good so far!

Re: My PT-19 Upgrade
Definitely will double up on the rubber bands. Hopefully the wings won't fold up under the load. And a 6x2 for the loop, excellent advice, not too much forward speed and lots of torque, like being WFO in first gear.I'll get as close to a 6x2 as I can for the great stunt experiment. 6x3 at worst.

I think APC still makes a 6x2 and a 5.7x3 that should help.

Re: My PT-19 Upgrade
When flying loops with Cox P-19 I found that they are best initiated with a dive to build air speed before starting the actual loop,
Starting from elbow height ain't gunna do it. It will invert and then stall on you. CRASH!.
