Can anyone provide pics or links to this model: control line dark blue plastic P-39 from Cox

Details:  The top and bottom halves of the fuselage (w/ wings built into bottom half) actually rubber-banded together to allow them to fly apart in a crash.  This would allow the engine which had sort of a white plastic firewall backplate inserting into slots in the fuselage halves to come flying out also.  Engine was .049 with no integral tank, rather fuel tubing went to a nearby plastic tank in the fuse.  There was also some sort of rubber-band or spring-actuated mechanism to try to keep the elevator control bellcrank close to center to prevent beginners from over-controlling, I think maybe I eventually decided to quit using this.  It never really flew well, I can't remember how long a flight I ever got with it.  It was my first-ever control line plane but soon I was steered toward an all-balsa trainer with larger solid-balsa wing and solid-balsa fuselage and larger fixed horizontal stab and elevator with rubber-band-on .049 engine (Cox Black Widow!) which flew much better.

Time frame would have have been roughly 1979-1981.

Thanks for any help on this trip down memory lane

Steve in Wichita KS

I suppose there is some change I am mis-remembering and the model did not come from Cox but I don't think so. The motor did for sure.

Thanks!  That's it for sure, I actually had just found one of those and was going to post a link but was not allowed because new member.  I don't remember all the stickers, guess I decided not to put them on.

You can see where the rubber bands hold the fuselage halves together.

Googling around the web it looks like basically the identical plane also came in a light grey-brown version.

I remember my blue one had a red spinner.

After we retired the P-39 I recall my dad soldered up a metal tank to go behind the motor, with a firewall sort of thing behind the tank, so we could use that same motor on later planes until we got the Black Widow motor with the integral tank
