Guillows Typhoon CL job...not mine
Guys,
I frequent several FB groups, and saw a post by Kim regarding his Breezy Hill bunch. The subject is the reason for this post. While I've struggled and failed to complete my Typhoon, Jerry finished one.
Of particular interest to me is how Jerry built his. He used the stock plans, but did more solid work and sheet work than the kit does in Free Flight mode. Jerry also built the world' smallest DIY foam cutting bow. This bow is powered by a train transformer running the small hand-held bow using a guitar string for the hot wire. In short, the end ribs for each wing panel were pinned to an appropriately cut block of foam trimmed to end-rib outlines. Then the foam wing was sheeted.
Kim, I'd love for Jerry to come back here and fill in the details.
But for now, draw a small bit of inspiration from these two teasers:

Re: Guillows Typhoon CL job...not mine
Nice CL conversion, Jim. I downloaded the photo to see if I could get a further handle on how he did, so it could withstand the rigors and vibration of a Cox .049 Babe Bee engine. I have that exact same kit (unbuilt). As rubber power flyers, they do extremely well because contrary to normal Gillow style, they are lightly framed, which makes them into successful flyers. Their framing has been simplified, too, fuselages have squared sides and flat bottoms. I've built their T-28D Trojan, DeHavilland Chipmunk trainer and framed their Cessna Bird Dog.
He did a really nice finish on the Typhoon, looks like in places he planked. I gather that the photo of the shaped wing styrofoam, he used that as a core then overlaid that with framing so that when covered, looks like it was framed similar to the rubber powered version.

Hi… the fuselage sides are 1/16 balsa, tail feathers too. The top of the fuselage is stick planked with some filler putty. The styrofoam cores were cut using the kit ribs as patterns. They were sheeted with 1/32 balsa. It was covered with gray covering… the olive drab is rattle can and flat clear.

Hi Jerry,
Welcome to the best little engine site on the Internet. I'm glad you showed up. Is there any chance you'll be putting up a YouTube video showing off your foam wing cutting? I don't know if FaceBook videos are exportable, but I learned a lot about mini foam wings by watching. Even the pictures showing the foam blocks pre and post cut would be a great tutorial in using large.model techniques on a small scale.
Oh, and if the attention isn't too embarrassing, please show off that fabulous looking Sterling P-38. @RSV1Cox (Bob, another forum member here) is a sucker for the plane. Bob scratched one out years ago around a pair of Bees,.and it is really special too. For everyone else, Jerry's is the big one, not the 1/2A one.
Thanks for sharing all you wish to.
