QaD Arvo - Evening build
QaD Arvo - Evening build
Very quick and dirty build. as always a slab - profile. Temp was well over 100 deg today. My new meds stop me sweating which sounds good but isnt very good when outside in the heat, especially direct blazing sun. So couldnt fly or go fishing today.
Three or so years ago when I returned to CL, the first plane I built and flew again was the American Boy https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=4046 which was ok for the purpose. I decided this arvo I would build a plane I could build quickly, easily, cheaply and fly within a day or so limited by paint drying. I built another Interpretation of the American Boy plane. This one has slightly different wing, much bigger stab and elevator, drop off wheel, rubber band engine mount, and is going to get a TD 049 to power it.
Yes, for the observant, those are staples in the hinges on the elevator. A hinge will never come off of one of my planes again whilst flying it. Its a very quick and easy method of fixing them on when using thin balsa. Standard everyday school stapler.
Ready for paint now.
This is a very cheap build and I reckon it will fly Ok with the changes made to it from the original plan. But, it may not last long as I really intend to enjoy flying this one really hard like I stole it and dont expect its life to be long. But, who knows maybe it will fly good and I wont go nuts and stick it in the ground. Ive modded the TD 049 so as that the crank wont bend the crank pin if I do stick it into the ground really hard. Still revs like crazy even after the mod so I will do it to all of my TD 049s

Yabby, I think you’re hopping up that American Boy just a bit!!! …. ….. Another observation, Looks like the drop off wheel is canted to the right a little…. Is that done to help with line tension on take off?

Hi Robert, yes the wheel is to the right a bit, but to be honest, the main reason it is to the right is to make sure its not going to the left at all. Yes, it will be fun seeing what the modded American Boy flies like. I am looking forward to flying it, not tomorrow, but day after. Sometimes the simple things can be a lot of fun.

Goodaye Eric, thanks for that The F4 looks good and should be a good plane to build and fly. Good experience for your son also. There are no free tickets, so he should help with the parts he can do, or give it a go and learn something. Lets hope. :-) My lad loves flying, but will never build a plane in his life, but in fairness, he probably couldnt build one with his disability. Im just happy to have his company now and then to fly them.

Hru Bob, its a super easy and cheap build and dependant on the motor you can get line lengths to suit you, and also line lengths to hopefully be slow wnough that you can fly. Use a 1/8 oz tank. About six laps and they are emprty. Might make it possible for you to have a bit of a fly
I hope to fly it tomorrow weather permitting. I'll let you know how it flies or doesnt

Re: QaD Arvo - Evening build
Looking like you got a good start to the build going.
Yeah, 100 degrees is a bit much. Eric was at 50f , and well, just for laughs, it has been a bit cooler here lately. We are currently at -11 F, with tonight going down to -33f and -49f with the windchill......

Re: QaD Arvo - Evening build
Thank you @roddie and @NEW222 . Its not built for long life. Unfortunately the balsa was very soft but it was what I had. The plan is 42 foot lines and fly the 'Gary' pattern. Being inside loops, wingovers, horizontal eights, reverse wingovers, all hopefully joined without a lap between them. Im working at adding a lap of inverted flight to my patern / manic repetoire. Thats the risky period for the jigger. If it can do those things I will be over the moon as its a super easy and cheap build. I suspect my expectations may be dashed yet but you have to try and see what things can do, or you can do with them, I dont like wondering.
Following the moddes American Boy from Outerzone will be a quite modified Scorpion from Outerzone https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=5973 I built one for my Son to fly and had a fly of it and was very surprised at its handling and it owned 42 foot lines with a TD 049, so I have modified one much like the American Boy and will see what it can do in my not so capable hands.
I know they are only trainers but I de-stress building these and looking forward to what I can get them to do it. They are just 'No Risk' pure fun for me and can be flown without any stressing if I stick them in the ground.

Re: QaD Arvo - Evening build
Im going to try and work out a way to hang my phone around my neck to get some video of some of my jiggers on 42 and 52 ft lines, but just need to get engines stable again, and then the technicality of the videoing Or maybe I just place the phone stationary. Tech is meant to be my thing, but I hated video and Radio right from being a student.
Might be some weeks before I can make all of the individual items plus the weather co-operate. Would like to be able to film the vertical takeoffs my X1202 does. They are great fun and very risky but look really cool. Well to me anyway.

Re: QaD Arvo - Evening build
That is why I do not have nice planes. I am not really to concerned if I put one in. I have 2 'nicer' planes, but will wait for me to get better, or at the bare minimum, just fly a simple circle.....

Re: QaD Arvo - Evening build
yes agread! The time will come but right now I want to learn. As long as the plane can do the job. I know the planes Im flying right now can do the job as far as I need. For me, scrappy old planes that are half decent that I can try stuff on and now and then crash is better than a beautiful plane that can fly square loops, triangles, overhead eights, but spending years flying laps of circles without even looping it because of being scared of wrecking such a good plane. If someone enjoys flying circles that is OK as its about the individual enjoying themselves. I think there are probably many who love building beautiful planes, showing them off at the club, talking about them, socialising etc. And that is a VERY healthy hobby and way to spend time. There is room for all of us thats for sure. Thats the great thing about modelling. People can compete if they want in many different facets of modelling, and best of all as my friend I used to race (also flies CL. many old road racers do fly CL) with reminds me, "and no matter what Gary we all go home at the end of the day and nobody got hurt"

American Tuff Guy it is :-) Thanks Roberet @rdw777 Ive got to get it into the air first. Things with my launch table and stooge that all 'just' worked seemed to stop working and Im having to fix it all up. It will come good just take some time at the field and at home to sort things out properly. Then I will get back to flying the models again! And the American Tuff Guy is first on the Flight Line. I too am keen to fly it. Its so light! I reckon it will surprise :-) as is often the case one way or the other with a new plane. I really want to get some video of the planes on long lines so as that people can see them fly on long steel .008 lines with a TD 049 and maybe try it themselves. But the plane has to suit the lines, and the weather needs to be decent.
