BJMR Twin Lizzie
Wife asked what I wanted for Christmas today.
BGMR Twin Lizzie looks like a fun build and I have an extra Pee Wee for it.
Anyone purchased this kit? Does it come with tissue/covering material. This stuff is hard to find around here.

Re: BJMR Twin Lizzie
Tissue is for rubber power models. Silkspan is what you would use which is very hard to come by nowadays. Polyspan would be the better however I wouldn't consider any dope or silkspan, polyspan on a SPORT freeflight plane. It could be ripped and torn on your first flight that is if it makes through the test glide. Iron on covering is the way to go. It's not too heavy and don't let anyone tell you different. You could turn the wing into a pretzel as well if your unfamiliar on how to prevent twists and warps whereas iron allows you to fix it. Iron on Doculam is stronger, quicker, lighter and easier to repair over any doped on finish. Use tissue over it or under it for decoration.
Just for the record, in my video I posted is a .020 Sniffer my buddy Dan built. That is covered with Monokote and he even had to glue the Monokote onto the bottom of the wing. The Sniffer has undercambered wings. That plane flies very well so to those that suggest iron on is too heavy for a .020 model, there you go. Dan's model also isn't a BMJR kit which is much lighter, his is a old Midwest iron wood kit.

So Doculam, wow this is all new to me, never even heard of it (excuse my ignorance), hopefully not too hard to find.
I guess my accompanying gift would be an iron. Any recommendations, best inexpensive? Thanks Ken.

Hanger 9 iron seems popular.

Re: BJMR Twin Lizzie
Doculam is laminating film. Just a thin plastic like material which has adhesive on one side. It appears milky until it's heated and it becomes very clear. I purchased a roll many years ago from Oregon Laminating company. I called them and told them what I was using it for and they responded telling me they had many requests for the same purpose. They sold me what they sold others so I have no idea of it's mill thickness.
Any iron on covering will suffice and some is lighter than others. For instance, Ultracote Lite which is a transparent film which works well. My iron is a old thing I picked up at a swap meet for about $5. I know it's days are numbered as I've had it for years and it works excellent. This means it's going to burn out the next time I go to use it.
I completed the BMJR Tornado last year. I recently got to fly it and it was covered with the Doculam. On the leading and trailing edges, I cut 1/2" wide strips of clear packing tape and went over the seams of the Doculam to insure no peeling would occur and I iron the tape down.

Good stuff. Unfortunately Im a rookie, I have no mentors, no one to show me stuff, I'm all alone here except for your help and others on this forum. Unlike other modern things there just isnt that much online for this hobby- details are always excluded. I truly appreciate your help and kindness. Im sure my questions bore most but Im trying my best not to waste money on stupid ideas. You can bet I will be asking for help during the Lizzie build in Jan (that is if Santa follows through!), so bear with me.

I'm very fortunate to have club members that are over the top helpful in this hobby. The whole idea here is to forward all knowledge to everyone. There should be no secrets. The problem with the hobby is that most of this stuff has died with others.
Our club founder Harry Freeland was a remarkable builder and freeflighter. Unfortunately, Harry passed away a few years back and all I can do is try to recall everything he told my son and I. There's no stupid questions, if you don't know something on this forum someone more than likely will.
As I mentioned, not all flights are going to go picture perfect. However, every now and then the flight gods will throw you a bone and all I can say is that one flight will have you smiling from ear to ear.

I agree. Free flight is to me the purest form of aeromodelling. Your model needs to be well built because as soon as you throw the plane in the air, she's on her own. Do enough gliding tests above grass to make sure balance is right and if needed add tabs to correct. I used aluminium coke can for that. I usually fill up the PeeWee tank with about 2cc of fuel and once the engine started I count to 10 before launching. Wind is an enemy and on a windless day, the plane might land near you. Not all models fly well or others get damaged by trees that suddenly step in the way.

Even a 1/4 mile is great, it's when they go for a mile and a half and it does it more than once is when you start getting frustrated. I was using a Cox .049 on diesel and one run it would be fine and another it would run for what seemed to be forever. It took me 2.5 hours to find it. Luckily, my flying partner Frank has a drone with a camera. He flew it and found it waaaay out in a soybean field.

Way to go Fred. Christmas season giving is all about feeling good, both the giver and receiver and your good at it.
Twin Lizzie? I was thinking some sort of a twin engined powered airplane.

Re: BJMR Twin Lizzie
My son and I and 3 others had a terrific weekend 2 weeks ago. I'm waiting for my buddy to post the video on You Tube. Our Dakota was flying very well. Finally, we had it trimmed correctly. It took some clay on the one wing tip and yet a touch more of nose weight. We were getting some seriously high flights.

My Maiden on Dakota has been delayed, weather, props (just got some in), I caught a cold, deciding on location, etc., you know how it goes. But again, your vids give me inspiration be sure to post!
