Show off your 2021 COX squadron
Hello Friends,
please let me know what are your serviceable models that you intend to operate this seasons.
For me, today was the first nice (~20 degrees C), sunny day this year and I brought out my COX fleet:
I spent about three hours on the airfield, and the flight summary is as follows:
- The black Curtiss was going strong with a quick firing, well running engine. A few flights in the rudder came off mid-flight, but I still managed to land safely by going a knife-edge. Funny thing, up until that point I didn't even realise I was able to do a knife-edge
- the green Dewoitine is now into its third season, and has probably had five different engines on it. I think the fuel tank is leaky, because the flight times are short, but all the fuel is gone from the tank after each flight. This is the only engine I forgot to overhaul during winter.
- the green-yellow IAR was starting and flying good, but the elevator was a bit vague. Turned out the elevator servo is half-dead and desperately needs replacing.
- the blue Fiat only registered one flight. "Sure Start" sounds a bit ironic, it's my only engine I'm never sure will actually start, and I bought it brand new. I probably spent 15 minutes or so trying to start it, only started three times, including twice in the wrong direction. I'm probably ready to replace the engine with something else.
The black-yellow glider is not COX-powered, just hauled on a string, old-style. At 150cm (60in) wingspan and 350g (12oz) weight, I'm wondering if a strong Bee would pull it, what do you reckon?

Hi Dirk how do you cope with the drone law of the EU that certainly had a national adaptation in Poland too..the Hungarian adaptation has practically landed all RC planes weighing more than 120 grams..lots of bureaucratic requirements like registration of the pilot and all his planes, third party liability insurance for each plane separately, case by case application for use of airspace even in the Open operations in uninhabited areas, drone pilot certification..I only have this last one but miss and will not have the rest..so flying legit here is not reasonably possible, but I will fly an outlaw because old habits die hard..

Glad to see that you got out to get a few flights in. The models look very nice too.
As to your question, a Cox engine will pull the glider up very well I believe as it is very light. People use Cox engines on power pods on gliders weighing much more than yours without problems.

I'm not aware about any legislature changes here in Poland related to RC planes, that is to say, I know there were supposed to be some, but I'm not sure if anything was actually introduced. At any rate, I'm a member of a flying club, we have a proper airfield, we have insurance and everyone else seems to be still flying as they did before, including models waaay bigger than mine. To my knowledge, there is no requirement for model registration, airspace access or a need to have a license (yet).

Got a chuckle out of the rudder coming off and doing a knife edge Glad you got it down safe though, I don't have a pic right now but do have in mine something to start out with the year , i have a glider also i am looking to put a pod with something Cox on it have not decided yet . Some 1/4/1/2 As and a .29 ship or two that needs some attention before hand .

Hi Dirk, I have experience with my mini-thermometer that has the following characteristics:
Wingspan: 1500mm
Length: 1000 mm
Engine: Cox .049 / Cox .051
Channels: 2 and 3 (depending on whether you want to control the motor.
Weight: in flight order 450 grams.
The model is carried perfectly, gaining altitude quickly and you can make long flights of more than 10 minutes depending on the thermals and the weather.
You can fit any Cox .049 / .051 motor into it
That said, I know your glider will fly really well if you put a Cox on it.
Remember that if the engine is in the nose area (in the fuselage) you will have an aerodynamic gain compared if you place it with a cavan on the wing, allowing you better performance and performance in flight.
I made three of these mini-thermics, and all three are perfect with the Cox, I leave you photos and a video, I hope you enjoy it.
here I leave you a video with a camera on board, wait to see it complete, I hope you enjoy it
