Cox Engine of The Month
TD .051 RC SPEED

TD .051 RC SPEED
I got the itch to build a TD .051 powered speed plane.
Make the plane as small, light and low drag as practical.
Control it with "Park Flyer" sized radio gear.
I bought a NIB engine for $85 shipped and it has turned out to be a good one. Probably an early model ..?
With a 5 x 3 rubber Cox prop it does 22,000 on 22% nitro
With a 4.2 x 4 APC / Nelson plug it does 25,000 with ease.
The wing is solid balsa sheet 1/4" thick with a full span 1/8" x 1/4" poplar spar
Covering on the wing is tinted cellophane, Towerkote film on the fuselage.
The wing is roughly 120 sq inch with 30 inch span.
The cowl is a few layers of FG cloth applied with medium CA over a blue foam form [aka "plug"]
Use a latex glove finger to spread the CA into the cloth. It takes very little CA to saturate the fibers. Sand before applying the next layer. This is a quick method for making small parts.

Let's say the engine might hit 27,000 rpm with a 4 pitch prop. The mathematical speed is 105 mph.
So I'll look at that speed as "Ground Zero". If the plane flies that speed or faster, The Designer did a good job. If not, then The Designer's pencils get taken away from him and he is demoted to "Shop Maintenance Tech".
One thing I see here is it's a nice looking wing on an ugly fuselage. There's always room for improvement.

A VERY WEAK UPDATE
Well I got 3 flights in today at a field where the owner of the 10 acre hay field recently moved.
He's the same guy I bought a rusted out Datsun 280Z from about 5 years ago. I overpaid for that "basket case / rust bucket" so I didn't feel too guilty about using his hay field today for 1/2 hour today.
The plane flies just like a "speed plane" or a pylon plane should. The generous amount of span makes it very stable and the "fore / aft moments" are plenty stable too.
The only problem is the plane was very slow today. It might be a little bit nose heavy...just a wee bit. The glide is what I would call "urgent to land".
I did not provide the engine with a hole in the cowl above the velocity stack. I think it might be a good idea to do that now.
It wasn't running fast enough to bother with video, but it was fun to fly RC again after so many years have gone by.
