Venom R/C Questions Empty Venom R/C Questions

Post  Kork Mon Jul 27, 2020 5:47 pm

Hello, I have a few questions about running a .049 RC, figured I'd post part of my project as well. I have a Venom with an RC kit that's going in a Guillows P-51 mustang, running off a frsky G-rx6.
I'm curious about what servos people typically use for throttle control? The torque required is negligible so I assume the lightest, most precise servos would be best but nano servos are a pretty niche market and I'm not sure what to trust with such an important task.
I plan to put a muffler kit on (and may mount the engine inverted) but does the exhaust pose any danger to the balsa? would it need to be completely redirected away?
I've heard these Venoms can overheat pretty bad, are there any practical solutions for keeping the crank case cooled?
Thanks for the help!
-Kork

Very nice setup Kork. (As shown, this is rather a Killer Bee configuration than the integral  tanked Venom though).

As long as the exhaust gases are directed away from immediately hitting the balsa cowl, you are safe. Reedies like yours can be equipped with a stock COX deflector shield that Exmodelengines used to sell.

What you need to do is seal the balsa cowl and the entire nose of the plane in some dope or polyurethane based paint that the nitro fuel cannot solve and thus castor from fuel will not penetrate and soak the balsa.

As to the servos I use nano size onez to drivethe throttle.

Thank you for the quick response!
I actually do have the deflector installed on that engine, and the Guillows kit included a vinyl firewall that I'm going to mount the motor on, so nothing in front of that will be made of balsa. As for sealing, I found this old thing of testors dullcoat laquer, but I'm concerned about its flammability.

I ended up getting a bunch of 8.5g metal gear Corona servos to run the thing.

Another question I have is about prop clearance. I was able to grind a radiator down to fit around the needle valve knob and behind the prop. right now its sitting at about 3-4mm of clearance, should that be enough to avoid and collisions?

That looks like the cooling heads used on Cox-cars?
You will/should not need that on an airplane.

Can’t you turn it sideways? It is thinner then it is long, but I agree with Surfer_kris, surfers stick together, that you shouldn’t need it if flying. The air passing over the engine should cool the engine enough.
