Cox Engine of The Month
Oddball QRC

Re: Oddball QRC
Judging by the picture, it looks to have been out of the box and used. I know unanodized QRCs came with some models such as the Cessna 182 Skylane.

Seller claims that it is "new" but the spinner does look dodgy. If the silver ones were supplied with some aircraft, then there would not have been an OEM box so, in this case, engine and box would not have come together from the factory.
Re: Oddball QRC
I'm no expert on the QRC, but it looks to me that there's no way that engine is new. The spinner and screw have definitely seen some airtime, the spring and cam both have been engaged many times, the head and cylinder are both nicked like they've been removed or at least messed with and the mounting holes look like they've been bolted down. Only thing that looks like it may be unused is the box.

Yes, it does display run time so it is definitely not new. The plastic starter spring ratchet disk looks a little ragged, shows wear. If it were packaged like that in the box (un-run of course), could it have been one of Estes doing, may be they were running out of red 8 cc tanks and substituted an unanodized one?

Google turned this up. https://www.coxengineforum.com/t8224-cox-new-qrc-049-cessna-182-skylane In the photo set, the engine has the same tank. There were a few others.
The way Cox assembled whatever was available, can you really prove anything?

The seller, who is also a customer of ours, said he got it that way, has now taken off the glow head and confirmed that engine has not been run.
A South African collector wants it, so we will buy it and see

I think it's definitely possible that it left the factory with a silver tank packaged in that box. you can find silver/half black versions of the Black Widow from around that time period as well (mid 80s into the early 90s). Which I think they did only because they were out of anodized parts.
If anything, that spinner and screw can not be new.

I did speak with the seller this morning and he says, re spinner, that it is only the lighting. Shall see … we bought it.
