I'm guessing she came from the factory like that. Considering the volume of engines
produced, this one is a rare/collectors item.  Cool   Drive plate?

Trying hard to stay with you on this one Bob.

It's missing the choke tube but otherwise it looks normal.  What am I missing?

Cute video featuring a kid having some fun with one.  Difficult to understand but you get the message.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV9myMpq3-c

I made one up from parts but have not done a thing with it.

The driveplate is not only on backwards, it appears to also knurled on the wrong side.

Yes, I noticed that, but I have seen a lot of other ones configured the same way.  Very strange.

If you look closely the knurled end is pointing the proper way.

I've had new drive plates with no knurling until after I pressed it onto the crank splines. Maybe this one started out like that.

I haven't seen that kid in years. I bet he's a grown up expert by now. I can't turn the sound up to watch it at the moment.

Ken, how can you tell about the knurling from those pictures?

Well if it's a "rare/collectors item" or not, or fouled up beyond belief, the point is moot.

I bought the darn thing just to satisfy my and our curiosities.

Got to build a plane for it, I have many BH hollow logs.  27 second run time on that small tank.  Just my time and speed.

Bob

Edit add....Going wild, bought another one NIP cheaper at $22.85 free shipping. I think I have a choke tube for the first one. If not Matt has them @ $1.95 may include one with my next order.

I don't see anything wrong with any of the pictured engines.

It sounds like the listing was for a NIP SureStart and not the one out of package, so you should get a choke tube with it.

Your right Jacob, I did not read deep into the ad. He has listed another one like it. The other one I bought is from a different vendor. No matter, thought it would be a great opportunity to build the Lockheed Electra twin. But think I'm going for the Thunderbird biplane.. Love those, besides it's the only one opened.

Rusty, I was making reference to the prop drive knurling and not the shaft. At a closer look, it seems as though the first coil of the prop spring is covering a portion of the driveplate. To me, it appeared as if it was on backwards. Nonetheless, I will say I have had my share of these and one thing I noted was that all of them had the backplate crack.I have new examples still in the bubble wrap that are cracked. The crack starts and goes directly through the needle valve. Funny how I have backplates from 40 years ago and all is still good. Estes offered them at $8 a piece initially. They were then listed at $4 a piece and I figured that to be impossible as the glow head was worth that much. I ordered them and they showed up.

I have about 2 dozen Surestarts, some NIP and about half out of the package, and I haven't seen the cracks referred too.
My first thought was that the cracked needle valve assemblies were not initially assembled by experienced Cox production line people and likely by the rocket people in Colorado with a hammer.
I remember ordering 10 SS at that time for $6.95 each and being sent an email that a crew was coming in on the weekend and paid overtime to assemble another 1000 to fill orders.
I received my order about 10 days later.

Posted in 2011, he must be in his late 20's now.

Turning up the sound won't help much Rusty unless you can understand 10 year old kid talk.

It seems like a run time of 27 seconds on that small tank is quite conservative based on the time he ran it and how much fuel was left in the tank when he stopped it.  As I mentioned I made mine up from parts on hand.  I have never been interested in them but thought it might be fun to stage races with a pit man standing by with a full spare tank.

Somethings wrong......nah, storage. Smile

I like those cam driven starters, big improvement on the slip over the prop starters.

Did these come with #2 cylinders or something else?

By the time of the introduction of the cam starters, the cylinders on Babe Bees, Sure-Starts and Golden Bees were non-numbered with the narrow two-slit exhaust ports, two by-passes and no SPI.

Not sure about the cylinder type on Black Widows, it did have the hex drive plate and the cam start in the end though.

There were two styles of starter cams, a red one with no hex, only a small hole, and the grey one meant to be used with the hex plate.

I also have some LH snap starters in my stash, if my memory is correct, they are black plastic.

Lot of blame to go around on this one Bob. Took admin to finally read the ad and look at all the pictures. Only cost me around fifty bucks, but look I have two six dollar engines. Smile

That's ok, after owning Cox engines for the past 70 or so years I'm finally introduced to the Surestart. Excited about it too, building a BH model for it, or them. I'm reconsidering the Lockheed Electra.

The other Bob......
