Thanks M’ , It’s close enough for us to draw up some scientific-like plans for a simple CL … if need be … Easy enough to convert to sheet and ” hollow log”

This is a Profile Mr. Mulligan , as we wanted to mount our Tee dee .051 on it … After all it is a race plane eh ? … Thinking struts and landing gear may be made ”removable" for grass flying and static display ..

Hi Guys , In was looking for some Pre-airfoiled balsa sheets like long ago … couldn’t find any … best I have for a wing is a sheet of fairly hard 1/8” balsa … You think that’s enough for a 1/2A CL plane , I could find a thicker piece or add a KF strip for strength and performance … ???

I think Sig carries the preformed wings. It is not hard to do with a long sanding block using about 80 grit sandpaper glued on with a solid flat table. Just takes a few minutes to get close to the shape you want. You can use masking tape on top and piano wire on the trailing edge if you think you need it. 3/16" is a good start, or soft 1/4". A symmetrical airfoil is a bit more of a challenge. I make a pen line in the centre of the leading and trailing edge for a guide before I start. I would think that 1/8" will be fine if you don't want to sand it. Older kits used it. A Fora .049 might tear it apart, but a Bee or Dee should be ok.

1/8" sheet will be good enough. As well, myself, if I am using 1/8" sheet wings, I add a 1/8" square spruce to the leading edge to make it more solid. You do not need to, but I do find it helps. And if I have to butt join two sheets together, I will also add one there too sometimes.

Re: Scientific Mr. Mulligan CL for 1/2A … Plans
Hi Guys , certainly a Big THANKS for the info , it’s been some time since we flew 1/2A … ( a very long time ) But after flying RC for 50 years , and mostly electric , the idea of flying the old 1/2a control line planes ( with Spider wire ) just seems like a Lot of Fun ...
Apologies , I was just being lazy looking for the pre airfoiled wood … especially since I was planning on carving some blocks in the old "Scientific Models “ manner … I was going to post some pics , but don’t have enough something here as yet … ??? Soon we hope …

I really do have some pictures of it , the parts are all cut out and the sanding is about to begin .. 22 1/2” WS , just a profile … If this works out we may “carve the log” …

Got my sanding done , now searching for some “ Banana Oil” … In best Profile tradition we’re going to add some 1/32” plywood doublers on the front end enclosing the maple motor mount strips ( yet to fabricate ) … with that short nose moment , we’ll appreciate the extra nose weight …
I have the pictures …

Well, somehow that worked out , thankfully !!! ( Thanks RSV !!!) My Thanks button doesn’t work so we’ll have to type our Thanks manually ( two fingers) !!! hahahaha old school
Here’s the pic how we got started …
And where we are now … Note the use of the Newton clamp to hold doublers to fuselage while the glue is drying ...

I hope that doesn't mean that it will fly like a brick GP.
Talk about "Old School". Duco cement?
Got to admit, in the past I used tubes of Ambroid. Today, it's Epoxy, CA, and Titebond and sadly Testors red tube plastic cement.
Bet it looks great when you finish it. Mr Mulligan caught my eye many years ago and I still think it's a great design.

Re: Scientific Mr. Mulligan CL for 1/2A … Plans
Thanks Bob , I’ll probably have to use Epoxy for the maple motor mounts … The Duco may not the best choice , but what I had . We already had to “touch up" some poorly joined doubler spots with Super Glue …
Funny I can’t remember building taking this long 60 years ago … down to the fine sanding now … we may have to go with a wipe on Poly finish over a highly sanded latex primer ( Glidden Gripper ) … I have no idea what the “latest” finish is . The old Dope finish was a PIA with a sanding sealer ( dope plus baby powder , now cancerous … ) Then a lot of coats … and then a fuel proofer …The only models we spent time on was the little Solid models , the 1/2A CL planes got a couple coats of color and that was it , off to the field , home in a bag … hahahaha
Mr. Mulligan always been a favorite for me , we built several of the Fred Reese MM design for 1/2 A racing … Fun !!!
Very strange , I coudn’t find out ANYTHING about the Scientific MM kit … except a tiny picture in an ad … No plans , Nothing , and now with Walt passed away … prospects look slim … We were very Happy to get the plans from Marleysky ^ and did the profile version !!! I was worried if I did the fully decked out scale version I’d never want to fly it … And after all we were here for the flying , not making another dustcatcher…

And then we addes a few lines indicating where to paint the windows etc. Not going for “scale “ just an indication … Fun stuff !!!
And now we’ll have to fit the Tee Dee .051 motor mounts … ( note , it may be too much power for this little plane … could be Dizzying !!! )
