Ah Roddie. Same old nose-over problem I see. Maybe you need to try something with tricycle gear.
Well, we've been waiting for a while for you to get back on the bike, and you did it!! Not with the plane you wanted, but you flew. Regardless of the competition, you're a winner
Rod.

The above vid wasn't the first. You don't want to see the first one..
I did actually maiden one of my Mustangs.. and it flew nice and smooth.. and landed without incident.. rolling to a stop. It was the first flight of the day and my first flight in 26 years! I didn't have the camera running for that flight unfortunately..
As you can see, I brought a squadron with me to the field. The little "Flying Blind" had to sit-out because of issues that I had with my stooge. The newly-built "fork" release was binding. The Mustang's first launch saw the pin release.. but the fork didn't drop as it's supposed to. I built the fork-retrofit so that the original pin-release would still work with models having a "linkage" for use with it. The little racer doesn't have a pin-linkage.. and neither does the P38.. which I wanted to fly today.
I've got some re-engineering to do before I go back to the field again.. that's for sure.
Congratulations Roddie!!!!
You shame me. 26 years between flights. For me 36 years if you don't count the PT-19 I flew into the ground here about four years ago.
Looks like the wheels stumbled on a crack in the circle. Not your fault. I would not have risked that beautiful Rare Bear were it mine. I recognize the fleet from your prior build threads here and imagine your starter was the one that you custom built.
Good going.
Bob

Roddie,
Try wrapping a line from pin release, around the tail of the bird, and bring it back to the pin release. This should work even on the P-38.
On conventional rear ends, you may have to go under the stab, up over the fuse, and under the other side of the stab.

Roddie happy for you to get out there and put an attempt in for the reed speed and to get a flight in ( wish the camera was ON) .. On a side note i would ditch the LH prop for a RH and see what happens , i think your just not getting the thrust you need . Heck my plane usually leave the ground in just a few feet !??! Either way glad you have a place to go not far away to do more testing !!

I got a time of 5 laps for Gus at 19.68 for 5 laps. Works out to 45.68 mph. Hope you didn't get dizzy. Roddie, maybe bend the landing gear ahead a bit, and bring an ice scraper to the parking lot. Your assistant could let go of the plane too. Mine noticed that her hand got oily but persevered like a trooper. You got to get out again quick. I suppose it is a DNF, and an entry, but a time would be good. Did you get a watch on the Mustang flight? It is gentleman's rules. We could take you at your word, assuming you are a gentleman of course. Again, I am not an official.

Following along for fun -
Unofficial averages for 1/2 mile runs / not best lap time:
Ken 10 laps / 42' lines Tee Dee
1799.28 ÷ 24 seconds = 71.97 mph
Shawn 12 laps / 35' lines Reed
1799.28 ÷ 29.8 seconds = 60.38 mph
Reference laps Per vid time readings was taken from laps starting at 17 seconds to 47 seconds
Used for actual lap time: 8 digit digital stop watch
Alan 13.125 laps / 32' lines Reed
1799.28 ÷ 28.5 seconds = 63.133 mph
Alan 10 laps / 42' lines Tee Dee
1799.28 ÷ 26.2 seconds = 68.7 mph (5 laps x 2)
Gus / Doug 13.125 laps / 32' lines Reed *time started after 1st lap.
1799.28 ÷ 33.2 seconds = average up to 54.2 mph
Per Alan est.:

I'll probably run this TD one again just for giggles. I found another TD in my toolbox. Kind of short on good TD .049 cylinders. The one was quite worn and the .051 shakes with that tank mount so much that it has to be set really rich. The tank mount is good with the Norvel though. I got a couple Conquests . I might mount one on an F2D combat. That should be at least something to show off here. No one else is likely too interested. I have to machine up a venturi and needle valve first, maybe a turbo head, otherwise I would have ran it already.

Well, we know it can be done. You-tube or Facebook has clips of many jet powered take offs. I posted a picture of Pauls early “building/modifying “ of a SR-71. Here’s a link to the actual flight: I don’t know why he didn’t submit it here for the contest, but fun to watch:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvNG20w9pQ0
It has to have helped having years of speed racing experience to stay up with the jet power boost!! I just love the sound of those twin angry bees!

I did watch that video, Marley. Not to take away from it, but it was wick-lit and airborne when it kicked in.
Mine is to be launched on the rocket by burning through the release string and launched off a dolly.
Now that the pressure of the race is off, I can spend time working out the bugs I expect to encounter. I have a B-6-4 engine to stick in it for the final flight. That rocket engine may blow the front of the plane off when the parachute charge lights off!

Jim- just be sure the rocket engine is not “locked-in” the engine mount. Test fit it to be just snug, use masking tape and some ribbon wrapped around the end to ensure it won’t fall out, then when the parachute charge lights off it’ll eject the engine and unravel the ribbon holding it in.

Ok guys,
Even though we didn’t get enough participants Fred still wants this to move forward. I have solicited aspeed to calculate times as I could honestly use the help and I will post the voting polls for the other judged elements.

Re: 2018 to 2019 CEF Run What YA Brung UNLIMITED speed contes (CLOSED)
Greetings! Well, I see the decision has been put forward to close the contest . Interestingly, my submission appears to be missing . Over the past few weeks, I've been awfully busy taking care of my wife since her surgery, teaching model rocketry classes and a number of other community based activities as I suspected and wrote to Fred earlier .... before the deadline was extended.
This was my official entry for the "Run What Ya Brung Contest": https://youtu.be/fCjNNKYEe_A . The engine was a Cox Tee Dee .049 engine mounted to my scratch built MINI BLOB flying on lines measuring 42' from centerline of the handle to the centerline of the plane as per the event rules. The timing for speed was for 10 laps which began after the first two warm up laps. The ten laps timed out at 23.62 seconds yielding a calculated speed of 76.175 mph.

If this is the run your telling me is 76 mph. I'm not the judge these are my findings. I timed that run and I come up with 69 mph and I'm being quite generous with my calculation. While no one mentioned it, your flying still too high which is shortening the radius. Ken

I get 26.32 for 10 laps or 68.32 mph. It seems a bit slower near the end. I do agree that a lot of the flight was a bit high. Did not seem to be whipping it though. The high laps were actually slower at 2.7 seconds. One was 2.57.
