Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp

Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
Is there any reason that Cox glow heads and our various (Merlin) adapters, including the style that uses a standard glow plug, will not work in Norvel .049 or Wasp .061?
Re: Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
They will work in both engines just fine.

Re: Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
Thanks, that's what we figured but were not sure.
Will they fit Norvel 061 and 074 and / or any other engines?

RE: Cox heads/adapters for Norvel and Wasp
They also will fit the Norvel .061 but not the Norvel .074 since that ring /plug assembly is much larger than the Norvel .049/.061..

Re: Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
Thanks so much for the input and we do know that they fit certain OK Cub engines as well.
Re: Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
Also fits VA Mk1, Stels, AME Aero.

Re: Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
As the first start of a brand new Norvel .061 can be difficult for a newcomer to these engines, I always recommend using a Cox head for the first crank and run. This prevents too many cold flips which can damage a brand new Norvel. I like to use the optional starter spring too. They also work for many other engines including Cox and Brodak .049s. Just zip tie the anchor leg to the beam of the plane's nose.
I also advise to never spin a brand new one through TDC until the engine has been run long and hot enough to start breaking in and properly mating the metals of the piston and liner. After the first run, you can put the OEM head and plug back in.
The NV Engines site says to oil a new engine with pure castor and spin it cold with a drill motor prior to ever trying to crank it. Sorry, NV, but I am 100% sure that is a very BAD idea that will permanently reduce performance and life of the engine.

PS: I was told on Monday of this week that the maker of Merlin heads had died. However, neither Merlin nor Google backs this up.

Would it be possible to get exact engine names and sizes for each engine?
Re: Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
Those are the exact names. All 3 I named are from Russia. They're all .049 engines. Stels made a twin rear exhaust and a side exhaust. The plugs fit both. VA is the manufacturer of the MK1 and MK2 engines. The Merlin plugs won't fit the MK 2 as it was designed for a Nelson plug and it utilizes it's own style of lock down clamp. The AME is the predecessor to Norvel. AME was actually the brand and the cases had A3ro cast on the exhaust side of the case with the E backwards. The case nose length is shorter than the Norvel's and they're timed for high performance combat. Sometimes they're described as Zeus engines. They're also quite common as they were inexpensive at the time. All of the above were made available in the 90's. The AME designation has now gone onto being a description of porting of the Norvel line. Norvel made the Big Mig for sport and the higher rpm version known as the AME.

Re: Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
Ok thanks.
So we are planning of listing standard and HC Cox .049 glow heads for:
Norvel .049
Norvel .061
Wasp .061
VA MK1 .049
VA MK2 .049
Stels .049
AME Aero .049
Does the above sound right?

Re: Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
Take out the MK 2, I mentioned this in my above post that Merlin plugs don't fit that engine due to the special locking ring designed for a Nelson plug.

Re: Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
Got it Ken but we only listed our Tee Dee Glow head in this respect. "Merlin" is a moot point now anyhow, unfortunately. Al from Merlin has left the planet and we will miss him. Great guy and great support for us modellers.
Re: Cox heads / adapters for Norvel and Wasp
I hope that his products stay with us. On another note, the drop in element will work on all the engines I mentioned but it requires the Merlin head clamp. The outside diameter of the Merlin plug is larger therefore the plug is not a direct replacement unless one drills out their stock head clamp. I've always purchased these plugs in pkgs of 3 plugs and a head clamp.
