Making a Starter for Cox Engines

I made this simple starter for small engines. I used a Mabuchi 540 motor of an old drill. It comes with a gear on shaft. A wheel collar also works instead of the gear. I mounted a piece of 5/16 inch inner diameter hard rubber hose on gear. I tied hose with wire and twisted wire ends. A piece of heat shrink tubing encloses the wire on hose. I epoxied a push button on side of motor can, then soldered terminals on motor connector and push button to change the battery when required. 2S 1000 mAh Li-Po battery supplies power. I wrapped the motor and battery with electrical tape.

【 ! 】 Engine piston must be at BDC so momentum help to carry piston through TDC.

【 ! 】 A drop of oil between drive plate and crankcase is needed to prevent wear. Using brass drive plate is recommended.

I like the way the batt. and motor are self contained but , i believe when the motor heats up the epoxy will give away ? I hope not ,, keep us up to date please . Cool

Spinner became loose and propeller, spinner and screw sprung everywhere Shocked

so I want to add:

【 ! 】 Propeller screw need to be tight to avoid loosing spinner.

Power is good enough to carry piston through TDC at full charge, so no need to position piston at BDC.

No heat on motor any. Very Happy

The DC 540 motors are easy to source from old power tools of brand new from e-bay rather cheap

A single 8.4DC 3000mAhr NIMH RC car battery is more than enough and can be found well under $10 bucks these days

hint#1-- with a DC motor one can reverse the +/- leads and start a left hand crank engine
hint#2 ----make damned sure the engine is NOT flooded... bent crank for sure

hint#2 ----make damned sure the engine is NOT flooded... bent crank ....

For smaller engines I only bump up the starter speed a little then release the starter button before pressing the starter cone to the engine spinner so it is only the starter rotor inertia that will drive the engine crankshaft, with no electric power...thus chances of a bent conrod are reduced. I have a relatively small starter though..
