Mark,
Q1) Why is your Blue Mouse tach race entry captioned as "ported"? What's different about yours?
Q2) Did you seriously lose 4000 (four-THOUSAND) RPM just by removing one (1) head shim?!?!

Hi Paul,
I'm going to forward this to the group(s) as some might find it interesting...These two engines ran in 2009, then set in a box until this years race (minus last minute removal of one gasket each) so they're one of the engines that were in both contests. Although I'm not really sure what it tells us, as temps, props, nitro and compression were all different, other then maybe: "Nitro is our friend" and "IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!"
The Blue Mouser, Kim just named it that, as the backplate is ported to hopefully help increase air flow.
Red Unlimited
2009 w/ APC 4.75x4 prop & 35% nitro: 19800
2011 with Cox 5X3 prop and 25% nitro: 18500
This is probably mainly due to lower nitro, as most of the engines ran in the mid to upper 18k area. Hopefully Paul G. can comment as he knows what the ideal head gasket set up would be for a Cox #1702 head. Props load is probably close as the Cox 5x3 is a great prop, but it's considered kind of a 'club' load wise compared to the APC even though it was a smaller pitch.
Blue Mouser
2009 w/ APC 4.75x4 prop & 35% nitro 18900
2011 with Cox 5X3 prop and 25% nitro 14000
Part of the fun of this event is it’s a 'proxy' event, that means no pit work! The CD takes the engine, fires it up and takes RPM reading, no fiddling with engines. I'm not really sure what happened to the mouser, it could of been several things, so over compressed that Kim could just not get a needle, or maybe not so much over compressed as possible a chunk of sludge in venturi? I'll have to get it home and tear it down.

Yeah, hope I didn't cause too much confusion with my tags on the various engines. Some were taken from owners notes, while others were ones I made up just to give their photo tags a little more color.
The "ported" comment was in reference to the polishing around the intake, and was a non-tech term of my own.

My shift at the airport rotates every week (and sometimes just jumps around also !). This week, I've got the opening shift, which starts at 5:00am. On this shift, I usually get up around 3am with coffee & radio set with timers to welcome me into my kitchen!
Cape Air (no relation to Cape Girardeau...they're out of Hyanniss, MA) keeps it's little airliner, a Cessna 402, in our heated hangar overnight in the winter. The pilot does the pre-flight in the hangar, then I stage it up at their spot for fueling around 5:40...with their boarding and departure done around 5:55. So I got to be there or a bunch of peoples' schedules get messed up!
This is actually my favorite time of the day to read and reply to Emails and check Facebook to see what my buds are up to. The others go from 8-4 and 2-10, with call-out duty on the late shift, so that puts me on the computer almost around the clock ! Not a bad gig !
