Strato Bug question

According to the manual, Strato Bug uses a 302-A head. Is that the small-diameter thread version?

That is also our understanding but we have two new Strato bugs; allegedly 1955 is the only year they were made but both have the regular-thread glow head. However, they do take a 302-A glow head, which seems for 1956 and later.

What cyl. profile are they?

i think Mud said that some of the later Stratos used the 301-A head, more than likely when a product was noted as new for '19XX' production started in the fall the previous year for the Christmas market.

One each of the two in picture. We know the one on the left is the wrong one and the seller is trying to find us the correct one but all the ones he has with correct profile are the small-diameter ones.

lol, Mud is the king of all Thimble-Drome! just about everything i know is from him! From what i remember, the Strato came out in '54 and ended in '55 with the intro of the Babe Bee in '56. It basicly was a Space bug, with a stunt tank and Space Bug Jr. backplate. toward end of production the 301-A head/cylinder was used.

I'd look for the period correct glowhead, the one with the decorative fin at base of head, probably more than 301/301-A head, cyl. a yellow Kay-Sun prop is also a nice sign.

Went for $598.88 US, higher than I imagined, I gather they are very rare, extremely clean even with wrong head.

I think i have seen one of these plugs before and didn't know it was special at the time and most likely passed it along But will keep my eyes out , am sure you would want a NOS !

Its going to be almost imposable to find that head, the one in my photo does not have the little fin.
Since the engine is so valuable maybe you could find a cylinder, piston and head from a Space Bug, I believe the Space Bug had two intake ports also.
At least it would keep the engine authentic.
Also there was a question about the case with no lip and the gasket, a Space bug Jr. would fix that.

I think the flange was added in '54 to the cast case, most Strato Bugs have the early non-flange case.

Hi guys, I was reading the thread and I see the price for what was sold that engine U $ 598.88 !!, it's a lot of money. My question is: is this value generated by the collectors and the demand for something unique? or this engine has something special that reaches that number of values? ... I'm interested in learning from you, thanks.

It's classic 'supply and demand' only made for slightly over one year and the popularity of Strato Bug engine. Likewise the early RR-1 with non-anodized case seems to bring less money then the more common yellow anodized case.

We swapped the head of the Strato Bug from our house collection so that our customer has a complete and authentic engine and the seller is sending us a couple of heads; whereas hopefully one is the correct one.
