Throttle for COX .049 Medallion?
Hi, people, newbie here (well old newbie), getting back into model planes for my grandson.
I have a COX Medallion that, as far as I know, is a virgin. I wish to use it in a small R/C plane, & want throttle function.
The cylinder's OD is .515 in. Apparently an old one. Is there a throttle ring that will work on it, or do I need to retrofit a carb on the engine?

You should be able to get one to fit.
A medallion throttle system is what you want!

The only exhaust throttle system that will work with that cylinder is the old style as shown below:
The only other option is to replace the cylinder and use an exhaust ring or use a carb with a TD carb body.

That right there is quite possibly the best throttle ever made.

close call

It`s a close call between the 2 nitro, but the lmh110`s vmax engines throttle systen was less versatile, specifically designed for use in the heli;funky linkage would have to be conjured up to use for aircraft.
Medallion gets the nod for the lower idle speed and for versatiliy; but the vmax gets the overall more useful poverband curve , I believe I would rate it that way.
There are 2 good reasons I`m hunting for that speciffic medallion nitro

hmmm..the only problem is see with this throttle is that its quite rare.
do you really need a different cylinder for the throttle sleeve like on the medallion rc ( i never compared them)

It's the old muffler/baffle carb throttle, like what was used on the McCoy Blueheads and KB's, but for a 1/2A motor. A pain in the butt to get the timing correct between the baffeling and carb opening on those bigger older setups.
The Norvel heli motors utilized the same setup.

That's wher and Jared are talking about up above.
The LMH heli with a Norvel VMAxx motor.
The LMH heli with a Norvel VMAxx motor.
50% pv
=not exactly PV, the norvel only throttles via exhauts restriction, the medallion throttles via both exhaust restriction AND intake spraybar rotation.PV Pilot wrote:It's the old muffler/baffle carb throttle, like what was used on the McCoy Blueheads and KB's, but for a 1/2A motor. The only medallion with this set-up I ever saw actually running was flawless right out of the box,no tinkering req..

If you ever run across the medallion 049 for sale, let me know plz
GB: yes,it requires the thin walled cylinder of old,or a new 1 cut down where the exhaust restrictor mounts on.

Yes, my medallion i have has the same slim.thin cylinder. As far as I know there are no throttle rings to fit these except the throttle pictured above.
Cox international and a few other places that sell 049 piston/cylinder sets that accept throttle rings, and also sets with throttle rings with the set,as well as sell the throttle rings seperately.
