Help remembering
50s, 60s and early 70s rock bands/stars/songs
As many know, I just climbed into the 21st century with Pandora and a new set of computer speakers in my shop
While waiting glue to dry I was fussing around and pulled Rockability radio to the front and having a great time listening to a lot of OLD rock n Roll
Point of the POST
I find that I had forgot about a BUNCH of old bands, singers, and much of the stuff my folks listened to...like Roy Orbenson(sp?)
Younguns OK to list, but I need help from the older gents like Kim, Rusty, and Bob to remember and list old bands, artists and songs from the mid 50s to mid 60s
MY music tastes were influenced by what my parents listened to....Like Mom was a big Trinny Lopez fan...dad loved classical but the more upbeat stuff ..... example Taiskosky 1812 overture
as I became a teenager in the 60s and no TV listened to a lot on a new transistor radio.... they always played what was top 10 so I missed a lot of the lesser or more obscure bands and music
BTW I prefer upbeat toe tapping stuff....thus shied away from pee in your beer " the world is ending tomorrow cuz my dog and girl left me with out a truck" country stuff
so please offer up old obscure music you remember and loved....
weird stuff like "Star, tom, & the Galaxies "... right now playing Mr. Moto.....
Now and I finish this post Chris Isaak playing Great balls of fire...I know him from much different love songs....too cool

Re: Help remembering
Recently picked these up.
Anyone else ever hear of The Candymen before? After some research, I found they are basically pre Atlanta Rhythm Section. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fx_tQ-YrK2U
I can build you a big ass list later tonight... What are you looking for? Rock? Country? Easy Listening?...

Re: Help remembering
Jackob....love you brother BUT
don't PLEASE
I was not being a wise ass in a post above...here in Texas I am assaulted every day with my "girl left me and took my damned dog" music
I would rather listen to Kid Rock semi rap than any more "it sux to be me" music
Speaking of kid rock... I watched a Austin Texas TV show "Austin City Limits" where they paired up old school and new artists...
Kid Rock and Hank Williams Jr and Hank was seriously disrespecting Kid rock... Kid Rock did not let it get under his skin and went on to describe how Hank Jr and his father were big influences on his music.... naming several songs
later after the BS banter back n forth they each did one of their own songs and then a duet
Hand did what Hank does and Kid Rock did same song better...making Hank do a LONG double take
If anyone can find a U-tube of the event it is well worth watching the young man take Hank Jr to school
don't PLEASE

He Fred, while reading your posts, I thought you might
like to sample "The Blasters". Not that old, late 70's forward.
Think ballsy rockabilly. Used to see them a lot when I lived in L.A.
Steve Berlin(old acquaintance)sax player, went on to join Los Lobos.
Dave and Phil Alvin are still making music too.

Re: Help remembering
Fred, I love music but you can't pin me down. I'm into everything from classical to country. If it's good I listen to it. My car radio seldom leaves PBS. Performance Today (PT) with Fred Child is a favorite. Then the other end of the spectrum is Hank Williams (The original), Webb Pierce, and Hank Locklin. Those boys go back to the 40's and 50's. I never got into hard rock. The Stones never gave me much satisfaction.
My wife and I used to listen and dance to Santo and Johnny, the Ventures were another favorite. We never got into the Beach Boys or the Beetles except maybe Lennon’s “Imagine.”
My favorites in descending order:
Popular classical
Pop
Light rock
Patriotic music (I can get misty)
Country
Favorite artists:
Mireille Mathieu
Connie Frances
Jo Stafford
Joni James
Vera Lynn
Barbara Streisand
Crystal Gale
Jerry Vale
Al Martino
Roy Orbison
Kenny G
Glen Campbell
Elvis
Favorite groups:
The Platters
The Browns
Everly Brothers
The four Aces/Four Tops
Creedence Clearwater Revival
I could fill a page but you get the idea.
Favorite song:
Cool water
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jj7qab6KC4
Instrumental
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWTjjm-Gg3c
And for Fred, perhaps my all time favorite: 3:50 in it gets really good. Jazz lovers would classify it as "Scat."

For those that dare, I would leave you with this (again):

Oh, no. It's my bad. I was in a hurry so I skimmed your post... I thought you wanted the "sh*t kickin' music" country stuff too. Didn't process that part where you said to "thus shied away from". LOL!
I just got back from a flea market, have a few things to share about...not much.

Re: Help remembering
Fred,
Though I was born in '74, I have only ever listened to classic rock 1965-1982. Started out listenening to 50's music from tapes recorded by my parents of late night radio hosted by Don Daynard. Canadian DJ.
Anyway progressed from there. As a teen was listenening to The Beatles when all my peers were into early rap music.
You would be surprised to know that the current generation "millenials" still listen to classic rock. Good music is good music.
I won't go into listing everything, but some music that is becoming forgotten...
Dan Fogleberg
Gordon Lightfoot
Jackson Brown
Harry Chapin
Jim Croce
Of course those guys are soft rock.
Really you need not know of any group other than The Who.
Do an internet search. You will find what you are looking for.

Re: Help remembering
Yeah, Ron mentioned him & I see it in Jacob's collection. Jackson Browne!! Who can forget that incredible slide guitar tone of David Lindley on Running on Empty?
Music has the ability to polarize people or bring them together. I suppose the most important thing is that you enjoy what you listen to. Doesn't matter what others think, unless of course they try to expound the virtues (not that there are any) of Rap or Hip Hop or any of that sort of garbage.

Re: Help remembering
I did not mean to imply that I dislike country, or western music
There is a bunch of the older artists and songs I really love... Crystal Gale being a fav
But here in small ( cow) town Texas... the radio stations seem to always play the down in the dumps depressing songs. That, and to my ear almost every current CW song and singer sounds just like all the rest in theme and beat
My mothers brother is a music producer (stupid rich one too) who used to have under contract:
Thin Lizzy
Chicago
Little Richard
Janis Joplin
and a bunch others I don't remember....very cool times for his 16 year old nephew (me) as I got to meet most of then and get albums signed
Later he moved his business to Nashville and he now has Most of the current Country/Western stars under contract
You guys spent way too much time compiling your lists...I hope you enjoyed dong that
Each one of you helped spark the old synapses back into remember mode
I can set many into Pandora...others I remember well enough to buy and add to my slowly growing music collection ( all digital)
Out here there are periods when the Internet is buggered up and I just fire up the play list and keep on jammin
Air drums or guitar while glue or doping gets messy... grin
Thank all...his site and people ROCK!

BTW
Many many of your suggestions sparked a bunch of other memories
Wanda Jackson today just letting U-Tube keep going to the next...what a wonderful feature
Forgot how much my mom loved her and some songs choking me up with child hood memories
Funny how music can do that
And I found another of my lost favorites Joni Mitchell

Re: Help remembering
This is a great thread! Being a musician myself.. I can really appreciate all of your different tastes in music. "Good music" is whatever moves "you". It's as personal as anything else that we feel or experience. Commercial-composers/lyricists are always ISO the elusive "hook" that reels in the listener.. with something that sticks in their mind.. be it a message or a great toe-tapping rhythm. That's the recipe for the timeless music that's endured in our minds through the decades.

Slow day for me with heat and high humidity wanting to get some more dope on a wing before the silk
Internet slow too --on all my normal forums...I guess every body but me is at work or out flying and having a blast
Too bad I don't (or just have not learned how to) take videos and compile to post for others to see
I have been having fum reviewing this thread often and from one or more of YOU GUYS suggestion, gone in search of the artist or song
My shop always has at least two "Helpers", lately Gus and Sapherie. They actually have a preference in the louder music--- in their play--- I see them adapting to the rhythm of what ever is playing
They are such entertaining clowns!
In all my years, I never noticed a dog "get into music beat" until just now
Yes Virginia, I have seen many singing dogs n cats on U-tube...it is just that none of MY critters never displayed any attention to music...that I became aware of....curious
