Update
Published on May 7, 2016
Lil Speedy - TD .049
1 shim and HC Plug / throttle sleeve.
Stock venturi no screen, aluminum carb body. 30% nitro.
4.1 x 4.1N
Static 24,790 rpm / 7.4oz thrust / .127hp / 94.74w / 96.2 mph
Unloaded 30,492 best on Vid 1 / 118.4 mph per prop calc.
Vid 2 best pass 30,361 rpm. 117.8 mph
Doppler has it at 117mph at 1.47mins into the vid
Update on last page: April 23rd / 2016
Lil Speedy TD .020 best speeds to date.
Doppler Readings - Carbon 3030 best pass 106.48 mph
taken at 3:08. Low thrust was only good for speed passes.
Lil Speedy II / 35,186 RPM
If you like the Cox TD .010 engine then perhaps you will enjoy
this video of my new project. Stock engine with throttle sleeve.
3ch / 17in span / 60 Sq.In.
4.6oz RTF
Got in my maiden flight today bit windy out there gusty 9 to 14 mph seemed worse in the open field.
Used the black flexible stock prop due to wind and unknown landing qualities, Need to move
the CG forward to help the airfoil from ballooning the plane was a bit of a rocking horse do to
wind. Would tuck and dive when the wind grabbed it. 35% nitro 20% oil Plane lands great no
issues or broken props. I cut the vid short as its a long flight data bellow:
Black Cox Prop 3 x 1.25
- In the hand static 27,212 rpm -just before launching
- Best pass 35,186 / 42 mph per pitch actual speeds unknown
- Average passes 33k - aka hauling arse
- Run time with a lot of throttle play 12.54 mins.
- Full throttle run about 10 mins.
- This is now the fastest 3ch TD .010 on Youtube- I have reviewed them all.
- I have some other props to test next looking for 60 mph
Test Flight #1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EU0Le8UVXbw
Note after launching into the wind most of this flying is cross wind
to avoid the gusty conditions also shows more true speed without
the aid of swan diving from up wind. Plus the sun was up wind and
I hate flying towards the sun.
Green prop to test fly next: Static 27,412 / 2.5oz thrust / 52 mph / .024 hp.
Est. it will unload to 31k / 60 mph -more in a dive.

Thank you,
I plan to do more testing as soon as the winds are reasonable.
Just had to try it today as is. Looking forward to seeing what this
one will do once it's all dialed with the best prop.

Sounds like a pylon racer! Man those are some nasty looking thermals popping under those puff ball Qs in the sky. Good flying.

That looks like a GoPro video with a noggin strap.
Excellent footage but that flight would have been much too fast for me. I prefer mine at 20 -25 mph. Some I can slow down to walking pace.
The colour scheme makes it very visible. I will have to rethink my choices.
Nice flight, nice plane and engine combination, nice footage.
Where I fly - after 5 minutes I would be seeing blue flashing lights and visited by the boys in blue. That is why I have to fly electric. No law against that. Yet!

Great flight 1/2A Nut, thanks for the vid, it inspires me to ramp up my home-made 20% fuel for my 010 pulling the LilStik to 35%nitro. My TD010-s do not want to make more than 26k on the ground in winter, the best I had in hot summer -as you saw my vid on that - was around 29k unloaded.
My LilStik has a bishon-like forehead with that large firewall that certainly brakes it a bit.. What is the face area of your firewall?

Great Projekt an Video.
Do have some pics from you throttle of the tee dee 010?
Running of your 010 is great!
I think, I have to built a little Airplane for the small tee dee like yours too!

Hey Nut, I like your picture. You must have adjusted the colors and contrast, it looks just like box art from a kit.

Re: Lil Speedy II -TD.049 Video 118 MPH Best Pass
Thank you I'm happy your are all enjoying the project / vid.
Lol Ian, you can always throttle down to fly slower
I did use a sports cam clipped on a baseball hat will work on better vid as I dial it in.
Neon yellow for the fuselage, neon pink for the accents and white under belly make
it all pop in the air. I adapted neon's back with they first came out lil thicker mill great
for belly landings.
The little .010 needs at least 20% nitro to start up without fuss.
The planes frame is smaller than the Lil Stick / what is your all up weight Balogh?
What sort of run time are you getting with your tank? Firewall is 30mm x 23.7mm
Firewall to the end of the fuselage is 14.5 inches / 36.83 centimeters The firewall
could be round but I didn't want to fuss with the design much it was built in just 2
evenings. 3 evening I had the gear installed and tested the engine the next day.
Note the fuselage is 34.3mm wide at the CG / Apex.
Yes Rusty that was the idea, I wanted an impact pic for the vid front cover.
Here is the next frame untouched zoomed in pic.
Some more pics:
Dynamite 4C / 150mah NiMH cells good for 4 hard acro 12min flights with plenty to spare!
Can do 5 flights 3.7g servos don't pull much current for sport flying.
X Ray of the Micro TD .010 " Lil Speedy II "
Ian, here is my cam setup uses my smart phone for remote access / settings and viewing
Lil Speedy I (ended up needing a TD .020 to haul arse)
The making of a throttle sleeve note the opening was too big needs to be
slightly less then the space between the cylinder slits to close off throttle.
My original effort matched the exhaust ports cant do that or it wont idle
down all the way. You can then put a groove around the sleeve to use a
E clip for attaching the throttle push rod. You have to grind off the footing
on the cylinder in order to slide on the sleeve.
Imagine 6 of the Lil Speedy planes in a pylon race would be a heart thumping moment for sure.

Thanks for the data.
The Lilstik weighs 162 grams without fuel. The firewall is 4.5x4.5cm square. This accommodates even a 020
The fuselage length is 37cm.
My ballon tank will carry fuel enough for 10 minutes in unthrottled flight.

Re: Lil Speedy II -TD.049 Video 118 MPH Best Pass
Yes I made my bit bigger to use the TD .020 with a aluminum firewall mount. Was done just in case
the TD .010 wasnt able to get the job done. Although I really don't want to upgrade this plane as it's
made for the TD .010 exclusively for performance flying like a larger plane.
Introducing "Capt. Zip Nitro"
The pilot can actively turn his head with the direction of flight.
Too bad he is just drag but may fly with the plane on a calm day
I will take a video if he does.

Tested the Green Drone Prop 3x2E
Best pass cross wind 32,792 rpm / 62 mph
Solid pull better loops and faster turns great prop!
Down wind passes:
33,941rpm / 64 mph - Looks like about 55 mph.
Best down wind stock Cox black prop 36,256 rpm / 43 mph
On a side note the Dynamite 150 mah pack took 98mah back in the
pack after 5 flights over 10mins ea. when charged leaving 52 mah left.
Average of 19.6mah per flight.

TD 0.010 R/C impossible!
I have to say I'm impressed with what you've accomplished with this delightful little engine. That you are able to throttle it AND keep it running for more than a couple of minutes.
When the 0.010 first came out it was really impossible for any meaningful R/C due to equipment weight and capabilities.
Your plane has certainly overcome all of these.
So my questions:
1. Have you had any problem with the piston ball joint coming loose at those rpms?
2. How long do you think an 0.010 would last given decent care?
3. How have you determined rpm in flight? I used to compare the engine sound with a musician's pitch pipe and then calculate afterwards.
4. Are you using some sort of bladder tank? I would think there would be mixture problems with something conventional.
5. What is fuel tank capacity?
Again, thanks for posting your videos and keep it flying!

Re: Lil Speedy II -TD.049 Video 118 MPH Best Pass
Thank you Jim, per your questions some answer are in the thread.
1. Have you had any problem with the piston ball joint coming loose at those rpms?
No the weight of the plane is less than 5oz fueled.
2. How long do you think an 0.010 would last given decent care?
I oil it after each flight and expect it to provide good performance for 200 plus flights, I own 7 TD .010's
I expect the engine to last over 500 flights by then I would have increased compression to keep the
power up. Regain by grinding down the bottom of the glow plug and using more castor and nitro if need be after a few more flights will check the piston ball socket and reset if need be normally after the first reset it holds for a long time providing you have matched the engine well prop and load wise
3. How have you determined rpm in flight? I used to compare the engine sound with a musician's pitch pipe and then calculate afterwards.
3x1.25 prop using an audio tach has done cross wind 35.186 rpm best pass 42 mph
Best down wind stock 3x1.25 Cox black prop 36,256 rpm / 43 mph
3x2E prop best pass cross wind 32,792 rpm / 62 mph / per prop calc.
3x2E prop best down wind 33,941 rpm / 64 mph - Looks like about 55 mph
4. Are you using some sort of bladder tank? I would think there would be mixture problems with something conventional.
I use a small pill bottle see "X Ray" pic posted in this thread uses a small metal clunk in the tank.
5. What is fuel tank capacity?
Holds around .7oz for over 10min flights

Re: Lil Speedy II -TD.049 Video 118 MPH Best Pass
Flight with the competition grey stock prop the consistent pitch of the ridged blade keeps things fair.
The additional weight of the prop makes less rpm then the lighter black prop. The grey material
is easy to cut and reshape though. Hands down the lighter black prop is the way to go the pitch
will flex a bit and add more speed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFawt584v_s
Could also reduce the planes over all size and wings Sq. In. if just a two channel with the stock tank.
Also there are 80mah 4.8v cells good for 4 flights if just 2 servos over all weight can be reduced
to 3.5oz RTF with a reduction of 1.2oz and 40 Sq. In wing should fly 10 to 15% faster.
80mah NiMH good for 4 flights on two servos about 7g battery pack.
I have one of these packs on order as I plan to make a another 3ch plane with the reductions.

Re: Lil Speedy II -TD.049 Video 118 MPH Best Pass
I had one of the very early Cox .010 engines purchased soon after my return to the states from a tour with the USAF in Germany. It was said that it could turn 32,000 rpm, but we had no tachometers capable of measuring that high of an RPM! All the engine reviews I've read only hint at that figure, with lab tested values closer to 27,000 rpm. We were stationed in Denver CO at the time, so the altitude would have had some effect as well.
I'm sure mine never approached those figures, as the only runs were to show friends the screaming little jewel held between thumb and fingers! My fingers would go numb long before the needle could be tweeked for max rpm anyway.
Gave it to a good friend of mine who was competing in FF events, along with all the spare parts I'd purchased along the way.
Bought a couple more since then, but I understand they won't rev as high as the originals.
Wonderful little engines regardless, and handling couldn't have been better.

Wonderful little engines regardless, and handling couldn't have been better.

Re: Lil Speedy II -TD.049 Video 118 MPH Best Pass
Thank you for your kind words Balogh,
I'm tempted to make another one for all out speed, the current version is small and better proportioned
than designs from back in the day but could be reduced as shown in the last post.
Hi Bill,
You are correct the early ones had a better cylinder fit and exhaust port position.
You can make the newer version run better but does require the glow plug to be filed down
a tad for better compression open up the venturi a hair, use a remote tank for better fuel pressure.
For speed can reduce the prop dia. to 2.8in x 1.25 and it will scream past 27k with 30 to 40% nitro
will push it there.
Here you go a static test best read 28,100 rpm / 35% nitro
I am closer to sea level here around 870ft is the average grade
at my flying field.

Very impressive indeed!
My computer crashed last night, so I purged all Adobe software from my system, and can't view pdf files, or watch flash player videos for now. Adobe gives me nothing but problems on this Dell XP PC, so I'm switching to Firefox, as it seems to have more patience with Adobe than I do.
One of my Cox .010 engines is a post 90's NIB (all black plastic parts). The other appears to be new without a box, and has all red plastic parts (as the originals had). I won't be running either, as I have too many used engines to run for the first time since they were purchased.
Do you know if the original .010 TD's had cylinder taper, like all the other early TD's?

Re: Lil Speedy II -TD.049 Video 118 MPH Best Pass
A valid question Bill. I have 7 red and 1 black TeeDee 010 engines almost all NIB and I disassembled a few that were loosely assembled to check the tapering but found none.
On my old 049 and 051 I find tapered bore with some of the old stepped wall cylinders but not all. Strangely I have a thick wall new 051 cylinder piston combo with excellent tapered fit.
Tapering must have been stopped as a cost saving program in the mid 70-s while thick wall cylinders came later and still my 051 features tapered bore. ..

If it has a gold crank case and gold prop plate odds are you have a engine
that has a good matched piston cylinder.
I have 5 gold cases and two silver 4 have aluminum carb bodies. I would have to
take them apart to check for a taper fit. Looks like Balogh has confirmed they don't.
Another important feature if the exhaust ports are facing fore and aft or parallel
with the crank shaft that means your bypass ports are lined up with the spinning
flywheel what this does is aid in better air fuel transfer and equates to a boost in
rpm for .049 engines its about 800 rpm on average. With the TD .020 and .010
its 1000 and 1500 rpm respectfully. Notice the alignment of the cylinders from
right to left.
Here is a pic of 5 of them not in use at the moment some day..
The engine up front is a silver case silver prop plate aluminum carb body.
I put a new old stock piston cylinder on it and whamO awesome compression.
Prior to that I had fine filed the top of the cylinder and glow plug. That effort
had it bench testing around 26.4k and flew with the original Lil Speedy I.
The all silver was cutting cost on iodizing and no cylinder / piston matching.
If you have 3 or 4 of the all silver ones it would be worth trying your hand
at matching them up for best fit.
Note that two of them with black aluminum carb bodies and gold cases I bought
the black back plate to color match. Also one has a TD .020 spinner and a
2.6x2.5 speed prop another a 3x3 with .020 spinner.
From what I have learned the best spinner is the custom bullet spinner allows
the highest unloaded rpm best clean airflow, second best is the stock,
third the .020 spinner but great if you have a larger dia. prop hub.
