You should be able to find what you need here - http://www.mcmaster.com/#threaded-rods/=w4w7ba
Edit: Andrew beat me to it. Mcmaster Carr will only ship internationaly if you have business license.

Re: threaded rod 5-40 "not needed anymore"
I know, it's a serious problem to find such things near by. I look around from time to time for bolts I find in radios or other things that could match but in vein. Also in specialized tool and bolt shops 1/8 threaded bolts are not sold. The smallest you can find is 1/4.
But there is a great, simple and easy solution for that and that would seriously help the major part of the world: I would think that Bernie could easily have a batch of 049 crankshafts made with M3 thread.

Re: threaded rod 5-40 "not needed anymore"
Here is another source with international agents; https://www.fastenal.com/web/home
They do not have 5-40 threaded-rod.. but they do have 5-40 machine-screws, close to the length(s) you stated. You could always cut the head off and re-dress the threads.

Re: threaded rod 5-40 "not needed anymore"
Actually Fastenal does list (from and approved vendor) 5-40 threaded rod but only in 3 and 6 foot lengths, the price is outrageous!

Based on the PM note I suspect Lieven has him covered

I sent a mail to McMaster to enquire for their shipping costs and this is the reply I received:

Hi Lieven,
Thank you for considering McMaster-Carr for your purchase. However, due to the cost of complying with extensive US export regulations, McMaster-Carr accepts international purchases only from our established customers overseas.
