New prop, repaired mounting pylons, rebuilt the engine and cleaned exterior.  Fun project.  It’s much lighter in appearance than the background model which must have existed in one of those “smoke filled environments.” Smile  But the shading is so universal over the entire model, when alone it doesn’t stand out.

Pilots used to call these “Spads", famous for being able to lift more than their own weight in ordnance.  While stationed in Jacksonville in the late fifties, they would fly them to Cuba for training.  The pilots would fill the “hell hold” (Door and window) with Cuban rum and other spirits.  Sometimes customs agents were there to meet them when they returned.

Anyone have an idea what this relief (above the rockets) is for? These had no third line provisions and it's not aligned with the reliefs for the control lines.

I believe some models came with throttle control. So that's what the third string was for.

Probably, There were a couple of blue Skyraiders sold on ebay last week that had throttle controls. I lost out on both of them. Sad

I have to say that credit is truly due here. Your restoration and cleaning on these past few planes have been truly astounding. You really could turn these right back into $$$$ if so desired. I don't personally do that, but if I was in a quest to find the pristine model, I can really see someone getting a nice example here if you chose to do so. Ken

Gee, thanks for the kind words guys, I appreciate it.  But, it's through all of you that I have gained an appreciation for these little pieces of engine powered plastic flyable objects.

As I have mentioned, before signing on here none of these existed.

toxic - Cox Skyraider - No longer toxic Loft%20airplanes%20004_zpssdm4omfy

No hangar queens here.  All have flaws and are flyable, although the desire for a few new in the box examples exists.  I have just two more coming, the previously posted about Cox F-15 Falcon and a parts SNJ, bought mainly for the canopy.

After those are finished I feel the urge to return to balsa and finish my neglected Nieuport 28 and build some Brodak and Blackhawk 1/2 A and .19 through .35 models.

You all have contributed to making a long cold winter here in WV pass by rather quickly.  Spring moves me on from repair/build to fly/crash and start all over again....... Smile

Bob

BTW, All of these are keepers, I'm a buyer not a seller. My 3 year old great grand son was here this morning and he heads for the table with all the models on it. He stares with "that wow look". I told him that in just a few short years he will be learning to fly them. And he will.

They show up on ebay occasionally, that's where I found a set of mine. I don't think I have any, but let me check.

I hope that I'm able to do what you do.. when I'm your age Bob. I don't even have any grandchildren yet.. and I'm 57. I'm not a "seller" either. (I'm also not much of a buyer.. being as frugal as I am.. Laughing ) but.. I'm continuously inspired by "you", your everlasting love for Audrey.. and all the memories of your life that you've shared with us here on the forum. You truly help to keep a fire lit under my butt!!!

It won't load for me either Eric, but I found it in my files. Taken almost exactly two years ago, it's grown since then.

Regretfully the only one I "flew" was the orange and white PT-19 in the background crashed and now in Ron's hands.

Yet again...Sad Smile

I looked for those Skyraider decals to no avail. They would only be cut out scraps anyway. Doesn't someone here have a decal file that might help?
