Refill Cox fuel can?

Refill Cox fuel can?
I just got my Cox starting kit. Inside kit was perfect looking Cox can. What is the best way to refill it with new nitro? Got bottles of Sig but want to use can. Also that smell....all of a sudden I was 8 years old again.

A funnel?
Just kidding of course. If it has the little plastic fill disc on the can then it just pops out. A thin bladed screwdriver should do the trick.

Yep...but be careful to work around the fill disc, or you'll bend the metal...don't ask how I know...Cribbs74 wrote:A funnel?

Re: Refill Cox fuel can?
Hi Brenda, If the can you have has a plastic insert in the opening.. I believe that it can be removed if you plan on using the can frequently. It should always be tightly-capped when stored. Do you have any fuel bulbs? It's good to have more than one. A small 1/2oz. "priming bulb" is very handy for when you want to run/fly a small model briefly. and a large bulb's capacity is good for extended flying sessions. You don't want the fuel "can" un-capped for any longer than it needs to be. You can install an 8 to 9 inch fuel line on either fuel-bulb.. which will reach to the bottom of a quart container. You can transfer the fuel from one bottle to the other; using the larger bulb.. or by carefully pouring; using a filtered-funnel. Always remember to "keep it clean" when fueling. I "cap" the lines on my fuel-bulbs... which could be considered OCD... but nitro evaporates quickly out of the fuel, for one thing... and laying a small primer-bulb (particularly) down in the grass/dirt can pick up grit/debris that will surely cause fuel-system related headaches. A small wire-nail with a string attached can be used to plug/seal an open line from leaking, when a fuel bulb is placed where it could fall over. It also keeps the fuel in the bulb "that much fresher".
It's cool that you're using a Cox fuel can!! Happy Modeling!!!

Re: Refill Cox fuel can?
Thanks folks,
I got the plastic thing out but sort of messed it up a little. I do have squeeze bulbs and all that. I wanted the can/kit to take to a event. I wanted folks to see me using the can and trigger memories. I will not use can to store fuel in only as a transfer sort of thing. I have a photo of me from the 1970's holding a can of Cox with the little lunch box thing getting ready to fly my Guillows Bf109.
Brenda
P.S. the inside of the can looks brand new, no rust or anything. Might use fuel tank sealer to make can last longer but need to see how it reacts to nitro.

Re: Refill Cox fuel can?
Brenda, been there, done that...don't waste the Gas Tank sealer. I had some left over from a motorcycle tank and put in a 1 gallon can I liked and later put some home brew Glow fuel in it...wasted a bunch of good fuel
Your Cox can will stay shiny for decades as long as you don't let water sit in it. In fact I would probably use it as you are thinking, then empty it and fill with a pint of any oil until next use.

Brenda, I think I have a new plastic fuel can insert if you want it. I'll try to find it this evening.

Re: Refill Cox fuel can?
Good idea Fred, filling or at least oiling the inside of the can should preserve it between uses. Air tool oil would be my choice. Same stuff I would use for after run oil.
I have an old unopened can of Cox Racing fuel. Now I'm curious. I might try it since I'm almost out of my Sig 35%.
