small Q&D 049 racer
Hi, I just finished a small Racer for the 049 sure start i found. Everything from Balsa wood without a Plan just with intuition,
A bit of data:
-60cm wing span
-45cm length without engine
-200g weight including fuel
-2 channel control, maybe rc conversion of the engine in the future
-Fuel capacity about 22ml
I could describe it completely, but i think Pictures are a bit simpler
Nothing really special, but hopefully it will run well for about 10 min.
Tomorrow ,if the weather allows me to, I will Try to get it into the air with the new 2l fuel i got today, mixed specially for my cox with 18% castor and 15% nitromethane.
cheers Georg(e)
ED: There will be better pictures tomorrow with daylight.

Re: small Q&D 049 racer
The first with combustion engine and the first fully wooden, normally, i go for glass/carbon fiber and foam (home built ones) in these categories i cant even remember every one, so many are there.
Building the whole thing took be about 2 days, The wing some weeks ago and the fuselage Yesterday afternoon+ today afternoon.
I dont like to go for awesome looks and scale, because i like to get the best performance out of my planes so losses are not rare.

Maybe it is full!
Re: small Q&D 049 racer
I only have a 4 gig card. I have to wipe it clean to get 27 minutes of HD video. It's a Samsung point and shoot.

Sorry for smart-as....ing but I guess some dihedral to the wing would do some good. All my 049 planes had some and the ones that did not have all made unplanned and fatal landings...Hope yours will fly well anyway.

I like it.............
I like it, it`s sort of a no nonsense looking design. I also would like to see her flying video

It would really depend on what you want the plane to do or how it's set up.
If you're looking to "bank and yank" (airplane racing talk for roll and pull back on stick) primarily using the elevator to turn plane you do not want any dihedral, likewise if its a slow flyer w/ rudder or a free flight you want it, more dihedral, more stability.
Amper,
Do you have a vent on the fuel tank? I'm guessing you've got stick time with electrics, as you probably know, watch your throw settings. It looks like well under 200 sq. in. It looks like it will hall ASSets! Once you get it trimmed you might go with a 5"x4" prop and hicomp head.
Good luck!

This will be a fast zippy little plane. If it's too much, you can always slap an .020 on it.
Looking forward to the video.

Re: small Q&D 049 racer
Yep, it will be fast, about 9dm² (138in²) , and only 200g, We will see, if i can control that
There is no need for dihedral since I have ailerons, with them you can control the roll movement directly.
The only thing I am worried about is the cg, the tail got heavier, than planned, but I think its in the range the elevator can handle.
The screw in the fuel tank is not only for refueling, it also has a .8mm hole from the head to the base so there is enough ventilation.
The camera is shutting down for no reason, the 4G card is empty and the battery is full,...

Re: small Q&D 049 racer
That thing will fly like best on wing but even with ailerons i would put a bit of di hedral.
Re: small Q&D 049 racer
That thing is going to be a speedy one. No coffee for you before the flight, you definitely wont need it afterwards either.
Maybe cut the prop down to 2" and give it a test flight toss.

Or one f those new "monster" espresso flavoured energy drinks and they taste good.
Re: small Q&D 049 racer
maiden
The front is a bit to light, but except for that it goes pretty good, it needs some adjustment of the motor angle and the wings will go 1 or 2 cm to the back to get the cg right.
The speed is nothing for beginners, but still good to handle. Even with the additional stone weight in the front it went up vertical with out effort.
Maybe i will try it again later today, but its freezing cold outside, i didnt even feel, when the prop cut off some skin off my finger ...

Re: small Q&D 049 racer
Glad it flew good. How are you powering the receiver?
The weather is fluctuating here, 60's to 80's.

Teeth chattering 29° here. Sent in my 47K BTU radiant Burner element to be rescreened and the ol'e quartz heater is not cutting it in the shop.

Re: small Q&D 049 racer
The reciver is powered by a single cell lipo 400mAh, that is monitored via the transmitters telemetry.
I guess tomorrow after school will be the next test

The lipos work out really well for reciever packs. Lite, cheap and abundant.
Running a ultralight 2S 7.4V 1200mah pack thru a 6 volt regulator to the reciever, for 5 servos on this latest build. A little bit of overkill, but no worries now.

Re: small Q&D 049 racer
Yes, The only nimh cell I still have is the one for the glow plug, except for that one I only have lipos ranging from 10mAh to 8Ah, they are unbeatable. The great thing about my (Jeti Duplex) Reciver is, that it runs from 2.5 to 8.4V and has the programmable low voltage warning. For single cell usage I put it to 3.2V alarm Voltage and as soon, as its below I get a warning from the Transmitter. this way its not necessary to keep the Battery full before every flight, this makes full usage of the cell possible.
