WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
I really need to go to bed, been working on a huge bid for work, but my wife left the last two pieces I ordered on my pillow... I couldn't resist.
I'll probably never get a chance to own a real one, so I built a Cox Venom Clone, everything is correct, except for the non-tapered cylinder/piston and the new Killer Bee crank. It does have a the closest cylinder/piston I could find.

A Real Venom

Venom .049 (0.8 cm³)
Manufactured in 1996 (#140)
The Venom was the last and finest high performance engine development of the Bee type engines. It had been designed by Larry Renger for control line Mouse Racing events and featured some interesting details. Most of these features were based on modifications developed for Cox engines by Paul Gibeault.
The crankshaft with cutouts for better balancing comes from the 1996 Killer Bee. The lightweight piston has sub-induction and a reduced wall thickness which makes it somewhat fragile. When not run in properly, the piston top may come off and also the strength of the crankshaft is close to its limits. Therefore speed was limited to 22,000 r.p.m. on the ground. Additionally, a single narrow boost port was added to one side of each transfer channel of the cylinder to improve scavenging. A similar porting system had been used on the early Tee Dee. The venturi passing through the fuel tank has the same throat diameter as the Black Widow (2.08 mm, Babe Bee, Golden Bee: 1.54 mm). To literally top it off, a high compression glow head and a few head gaskets to play with the compression ratio were added.

Re: WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
If anyone has a NOS TD Head for sale let me know, the one on there was the nicest one I have.
Re: WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
Looks great!
If you really want that real Venom look, drop a #4 TD cylinder on it (that is if you have one). The head you have on it looks alright but I'll see if I can spare a NIP one.

Re: WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
Does the #4 have the transfer and boost ports, or is that a needle in the hay stack?
Re: WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
Would the Venom have a screen? That is a NOS BW tank and backplate.
Re: WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
Also, the case looks to be the correct red, unlike the dark satin finish ones that are available today.... Who knows, this could be a Venom restoration
Re: WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
The #4 had a pair of boost ports, one on each side of both bypass ports.WingingIt74 wrote:Does the #4 have the transfer and boost ports, or is that a needle in the hay stack?
Bernie's Tee Dee cylinder in the link below is as close as you can get to that now, other than NOS. It has the non-slit SPI exhaust like the Venom and a full length piston skirt which you could lighten without shortening. That would make it almost identical to the Venom P/C.

Re: WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
SPI, on an engine, good or bad? Could I throw a TD cylinder on it and call it good and leave the short/light piston on?
Re: WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
Travis,
If you are trying to make it an exact replica you will need the later #4 P/C assembly which does have SPI.
SPI is a good thing in most applications just not when running a muffler. Opinions may vary. There is a ton of info concerning SPI on the forum.
You could just take a #4 cylinder set and lighten the piston using common tools. Lot's of info in here about that as well. I did a venom clone a while back I'll see if I can come up with the thread.
Are you planning on using it or displaying it?
Ron

The short piston will only work on the Sure Start cylinder because of the location of exhaust ports, any other cylinder gives way too much SPI.

Here is the link to the one I did. I wasn't happy with the results. Every KB crank I have run vibrates like crazy. The one I used on this build was from the new run.
I have abandoned them for tach race purposes for that very reason.
Ron
BTW: your wife is pretty cool. Mine would have thrown the pieces at my head while laying on the pillow.

I'll trade parts in the photo for the crankcase you have on eBay,
they are a piston cylinder from Cox International, has one bench run on it http://coxengines.ca/cox-.049-tee-dee-cylinder-and-piston.html
three KB cranks from Cox International, they are from the last run, new http://coxengines.ca/cox-.049-killer-bee-diesel-crank.html
one new HC head and two used, no gaskets

Re: WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
CB: I'll think about it, really trying to sell those parts though. Trading doesn't get me to my end goal. I have a few of those cylinders on other engines I've custom built.
What about if I take the cylinder that is on it now, to a machine shop and have the exhaust bar removed?

You would get this http://coxengines.ca/cox-.049-tee-dee-cylinder-and-piston.html Even if you don't have the ports lowered for SPI and you use the shortened piston with the slit bar removed, you will have too much SPI and the engine will not run well (I tried it).

Only if you use a SPI cylinder, right? Removing the bar shouldn't have much if at all an effect on the SS cylinder.
Re: WingingIt74's Cox Venom .049 Clone
Yes that's right Travis. When Bernie has the bar removed, he also has the port opening lowered so you can get SPI with a regular piston.WingingIt74 wrote:Admin wrote:WingingIt74 wrote:
