Helping Hands Empty Helping Hands

Roddie has mentioned "Helping Hands" in a previous post. It is a useful gadget for holding and soldering bits and pieces together.

It can be very fiddly to use. Adjusting the arms and crocodile clips can be frustrating and repetitive work isn't as straightforward as it could be.

I would be without one though - it has its place and trying to hold a soldering iron, solder and parts to be soldered together without one is difficult.

However, for certain tasks a jig is far better. By jig, I don't mean a variation of an Irish dance - although if you catch yourself with a 60W iron, a jig is often performed along with expletives.

This past weekend, I had a lot of soldering to do - 5 ESCs and 5 motors. Each motor requires 3 plugs (some of them tiny), the ESCs need 3 matching sockets plus a two wire battery connection.

That makes 40 joints ( not the things that you smoke - cigarettes do me fine (or not!)).

I came across this little jig and if you are into electrickery can recommend it or constructing something similar.

It saved me quite a bit of time!

I do like that! "Mr. Jig"... I would like to make one from something non-conductive.

Hey Ian.. how do you like this gadget? (looks like that thing in the "Phantasm" movie!!!  Affraid or WOW! )

I think it's for holding notes on your desk.. The arms are telescoping, to prioritize!  Laughing

Take a length (4 inches to a foot) of solid copper wire, say #12 house wire, put an alligator clip on each end. The uses are many and varied when it comes to solder and paint.

That's an excellent idea Phil.. and so simple to make too! Lock it in a vise (or a set of locking pliers used for a base)... and you've got an extra hand!
