My Score!!!

My Score!!!
Well, when I took my son across town to teach him to fly at the ring over there, my wife suggested that I take her friend's husband Don with us. So, we all went to the park and had a great time. Seems Don was a control liner from back in the 60's. After we got back to Don's house and were ready to go home, Don went down to the basement and came back with some models. An old Goldberg Shoestring Stunter that he'd crashed 30 years ago, two Goldberg kits he'd never built, and two Cox Wings bodies he'd picked up a while back. They are going to renovate their house, and by renovate I mean tear down to the ground and build from the foundation up. So, they have to get rid of anything they don't want to store. Don said that I could have the planes if I'd build/repair them. SCORE!!!
I'll do build threads as I get them back into flying trim.

Congratulations! It looks like you have some fun ahead of you. Those kits look like they will be good fliers...especially that 1/2A Blazer.

The Shoestring was the best score in my opinion. Great design and great stunter.

YESsss, maybe I'll finally have a Shoestring buddy to compare notes with! Big fat wing, fine flier. Mine was buttugly yeller when I got it. A couple of evenings of elbow grease, Googone and acetone and it was a blank palate again. I was lucky, as the whole wreck was covered with polyspan and fuelproofed under the paint.

Re: My Score!!!
Goo Gone and Acetone? Will that strip off the dope and Silkspan that it was covered with? I had no idea where to start on pulling off the covering. I had toyed with the idea of just patching the holes and cutting a new fin for it, but I think it'd be better to remove all the covering for a good inspection. I've already got a new bellcrank and leadouts for it. And I downloaded plans so I can cut the new fin. I'm going to take the expedient of using Monokote for it. I'm doing all my building in the room next to our bedroom, and I don't dare use Silkspan and dope to re-cover it. I'll have to place an order with Brodak also to get the stickers for it. A funny thing, on an older decal sheet I found online, one of the Shoestring decals is for Wynn's Friction Proofing Oil. The man who gave me the plane is named Don Wynn. I'm going to have to get some printer decal sheet and print it out to put on the plane.RknRusty wrote:YESsss, maybe I'll finally have a Shoestring buddy to compare notes with! Re: My Score!!!
I'll imagine another type of mark thank you.
If the covering is in good shape it might be better to get some time on it then strip it down. Silkspan is funny stuff though and it might be good, or not.
You don't *have* to remove all the residue, just make it smooth and fair for the new covering. Of course the more weight you can save by removing the old covering the lighter you get.

Re: My Score!!!
Whatever it was sealed with was totally unaffected by the stripping chemicals. Believe me, I checked closely and often. Unfortunately I don't know what the original sealer was. My bellcrank seemed sturdy, and I would have had to cut center sheeting to get to it, so I never touched it except to connect new leadouts. I cut a new rudder and elevator, which I stitched on, and rebuilt the inboard wing, which was shattered. Plus put the broken fuse back together behind the wing with 3 bamboo skewers and epoxy. It was snapped in two. You've no doubt seen pictures of the finished product. It's straight as an arrow and behaves marvelously in flight. Only came out 1.1ounces overweight too.
I have the Goldberg plans if you need a copy. They were a must have item for me. Let me know and I'll make a copy and send them to you.

My Score !!!
I had the 1/2A Blazer, long ago. I put a single channel RC in it, with a rubber band escapement. Power was a Cox .010, which was barely enough, but gave it a nice slow climb. You will enjoy it.

Re: My Score!!!
Yes, that's the SS. It's an old .35 sized plane, or with modern engines like mine a .25.getback wrote:

It's a replica of a post WWII Goodyear competition racing plane. It was built by a bunch of Goodyear engineers from what they could cobble together in a hurry in their hangar. After it was built, one of their wives said since they built it on a shoestring budget, that's what they should name it. The Shoestring racer. It went on to be a well known competitor. After the wars, the public was fascinated with aviation of all sorts and these were some pilots with BIG cojones that flew in the races. Probably doing things that would get their licenses revoked these days.

Where do you think the modellers got their finishing supplies in the early days? They got their dope at the airports and from the aviation supply houses.Cribbs74 wrote:I bet they even used dope to finish it out. Talk about huevos!!!

The one with the orange tail looks to be another Shoestring. Is that what you were asking Rusty?

Re: My Score!!!
The sticks are only giving the fuselage it's streamlined shape. Look under the formers and stringers, and you can see the metal truss work that actually carries the loads. Exactly what you would find in a piper cub, Stearman, Waco, or any other GA airplane until the monocoque "spam cans" came along in the 1950s. And all the spam cans still had the 4130 trusswork engine mounts.Cribbs74 wrote:I am totally glad mine is on strings. That thing is a stick tissue plane with nary a cockpit!
