Running a Space Bug Jr.
I went through this thing twice today. How many reeds does it require? I have one copper and one thin steel.

Re: Running a Space Bug Jr.
Thanks Mud,
It actually had 2 thin and one thick when I took it apart. I'll try it with one. You may notice in the video it never broke out of 4 cycle.

Re: Running a Space Bug Jr.
hey Ron, while your at it, try running a really large prop on it, due to the different sbj porting designed to help starting, it will run with larger props, an early test review claimed it would run with a 10x6!
Re: Running a Space Bug Jr.
Thanks for fixing the vid Rusty.
Mark, I'll throw a 10x6 on and see what happens!

That'll be an odd site, a 10x6 on that little engine. I bought my first 10" prop the other day and after 45 years of playing with 5" props it's downright huge.

Re: Running a Space Bug Jr.
Does this have the 3 piece piston in it? How tight is the fit of the ball socket and the plate that holds it all together? I have one 3 piece piston assembly that has more than 1/16" of slop and I am sure the performance is going to be poor in the babe bee it is in.

It was in there, but it was sloppy so I put a regular one in. I think the reeds are just squished in there and not moving freely. The reed arrangement is not the best thing ever designed in my opinion. No wonder the tank and reed assembly came as one unit for a replacement part.

Re: Running a Space Bug Jr.
Must be a reed issue then. Did you do a suction test to make sure it seals properly?

Yes, it seemed to seal, but it was hard to blow as well.

Re: Running a Space Bug Jr.
opps, i forgot to add, you might want to add 2-3 head gaskets and maybe try something like a 9x4 or 10x4 first. I think it would be cool to see.

Remember when Estes was blowing out Sure Starts for $2.50 a piece...where's that time machine when you need it?

Oh! guys you've done it again. Here I am content that I've just scored a new crank for my TeeDee 010, and what happens I now fall in love with a Space Bug Junior. Am I right that the later ones use a standard cox glohead, and are a quite practicle vintage engine for a novice restorer. Bearing mind I want to put it in a vintage model. Dakota? If not a Dakota any suggestions? Whats a ballpark figure cost wise?
Cheers

Eb,
Yes, the later ones use a normal head. The hardest thing to aquire is the reed. The good thing is the cylinder is interchangeable so you can run it just about forever.

Re: Running a Space Bug Jr.
Be careful using large or strong props on this engine because the shaft is easy to bend or break. Cox did not use an easily replaceable prop screw until they came out with the Babe Bee.
BTW, a Space Bug Junior was my first new engine back in 1953. :-)
