WANTED!!! cox engine with blue striped tank and gold finned case
The local craft/hobby store told me about this forum.
Back in the 60s, my older brother gave me a cox engine that looked like a engine I had "now long gone" called the gold bee. This engine had a blue tank that had some engraved stripes and it also had a gold case with what I believe were cooling fins. When I was a boy, I use to fly my little homebrew plane around the "now built up" farm field across my parents old house. I just recently rescued my plane from the 1920s era falling down garage in my parents back yard as the house and garage is going to be torn down within the next month. The plane still looks fine though wouldn't fly it anymore. The engine is missing on it, and I would just like to find an engine that matches what once would have been on it. I would like to hang this plane up in my son in law's bar and grill as I know it would fit in nicely with the rest of his collectibles.
please email me at larson1954[at]brew-master.com if you have one for sale .thx

Re: WANTED!!! cox engine with blue striped tank and gold finned case
If it looked the one in the photo it's called a RR-1 and unfortunately they are somewhat rare and now bring a premium price. I would recommend surfing eBay, searching Cox or Thimble Drome RR-1.
Good Luck

Sounds like you are looking for a Cox RR1. New in box they cost $500. Used from $100 on up. Really collectable engine now.

Re: WANTED!!! cox engine with blue striped tank and gold finned case
Yeah, a RR-1 is not the cheapest Cox engine out there. You said you had a "Gold Bee" at one time which I assume you mean a "Golden Bee", Golden Bees usually sell between $20-30 if you don't want to pay the $100+ for a RR-1 (when one shows up).

Re: WANTED!!! cox engine with blue striped tank and gold finned case
Mark, thats the engine! I can't believe how fast you guys replied even with the engine I was talking about! HOLY COW more than a $100 for a cox engine, I was expecting $20 at the most haha. I remember seeing baby bee engines selling for 5 bucks each at the gas station down the road from my parents house, I think thats where I got my gold "golden bee" when I was about 9 or 10 years old. In those days my older brother who was born in 1948 had a bunch of planes that he built. He was just getting burnt out on model planes when i was starting to get into them so he gave me that engine above as well as a bunch of other plane stuff. I think him and his friends blew the other engines and planes up with silver salutes if i remember correctly. I'll think about the golden bee as I did start out with one of those. I also used to buy babe bees to play with, i don't remember ever flying one but i may just get one of those since they seem to be even cheaper. Thx guys. Larson

Re: WANTED!!! cox engine with blue striped tank and gold finned case
If you want that blue/gold engine look you can save some money and build one from parts. It wont be a RR-1 but it will look the part.

Re: WANTED!!! cox engine with blue striped tank and gold finned case
Welcome to the Forum Larson.
The price of some engines has jumped up quite a
Bit recently. I think the days of the 100 dollar rr1
May be behind us now, certainly it is a very rare
Beast. The Golden Bee is a very pretty engine
Especially the older ones which can still bee picked
Up cheaply.

Since we are on this topic, what makes the RR-1 different? Besides the obvious aesthetics. Sorry I've never owned nor held one.

Re: WANTED!!! cox engine with blue striped tank and gold finned case
It is a rotor engine instead of a reed engine. It is supposed to be more powerful because of this, but I don't really know since I don't have one either.

Re: WANTED!!! cox engine with blue striped tank and gold finned case
I picked one up on eBay last year for over $500 but I think it's probably more of a novelty than a high-performance engine. Dunno for sure but it went into my collector box.
For Larson, if you want an "exotic" engine, have a look at the limitied edition "Blue Bullet" here:
http://coxengines.ca/cox-.049-engine-blue-bullet.html
That little baby would look awesome in your kit and makes for a great display set

They perform quite well, mine turns just over 18K with the stock low comp head and #1 cylinder.

On my Li'l Satan, the RR1 left the Black Widow in the dust.
Mudhen souped it up for me too. I haven't flown it yet since he sent it back to me.

Re: WANTED!!! cox engine with blue striped tank and gold finned case
inflation really did a number on cox engines since i was last flying. Thanks for the information and ideas, i like the fact that I could make one from parts and have it look like that "rr-1". I never took it apart so i never knew it was different internally from all the other engines i had. now that I recall, all my others liked to start either forward or backwards but that "rr-1" never started up backwards, even when I tried to start it backwards. Could that fuel rotary valve cause it to only run in 1 direction?
Thx Larson

The location of the holes/ports on the disc valve will only let it run in one direction. Kind of like a TeeDee.
Re: WANTED!!! cox engine with blue striped tank and gold finned case
If you flip the tank upside down it will run backwards. I had that issue when I first got mine.
