I like them both and a steam flying model would be quieter than electric but have presence. (and character!)

Has anyone made their own sterno fuel? ive read a bit about this... using 1000mg tums tablets and 99% iso alcohol? i ve been using a simple mint tin burner with alcohol... but since my homemade boiler release valve seized and the boiler blew up Shocked

.. i have a bit of redesigning to do.. and was wondering about an alternative fuel source.

My dad built a 50" steam tug in the 1960s. I remember him using an alcohol burner with wicks. The burner was a long rectangle box with closed top. In the top in a line were 3 or 4 holes for cotton(?) wicks. The wicks were large diameter compared to the burner box with and short. The was a handle to slide it in and out from under the boiler.

The engines were a home-built brass single which I still have and later a Stuart 10 upright single which was sold with the boat. The burners generated sufficient heat. I think the problem was the boiler running out of water after a while and no way to get any more in.
